Chicago Blackhawks recalled forward Ben Smith from the Rockford IceHogs on Saturday.  An announcement will be made on Sunday morning.

Smith has played in twenty games since missing a month with a concussion suffered in a January 8th game against Grand Rapids.  In that game, widely regarded as Smith’s best performance as a pro at the time, Smith posted 3 assists in a dominant 6-0 win over the Griffins.

In the 20 games since his return, Smith has 8 goals and an assist.  However, seven of those eight goals have come in the last ten games.

Overall, Smith has 15 goals and 10 assists in 55 games in his rookie season with the IceHogs.

This move comes two days following the Blackhawks March 17th game at Dallas, a 5-0 loss to the Stars.  A late afternoon Bryan Bickell scratch left the Blackhawks short a player and they played the game with 17 skaters, one short of the regular 18.

Thursday’s loss could loom large next month if Chicago and Dallas wind up in a tie-breaker situation, in which Dallas’ 5-0 victory gave them the deciding head-to-head advantage.

  1. Any idea what position and on whose line he’ll play. Either way, i think it’s safe to say putting our hopes in a call up from the Hogs is a little like grasping at straws.

Any idea whose place he’ll take on the roster? i’m assuminf they didn’t call him up to sit in the press box.

Top two lines will have to produce and then we can only hope Bryzgalov doesn’t have one of those games.

    • Most seem to think this is simply an insurance call up. I don’t know if I buy that theory. If so, that would indicate an acknowledgement that Stan screwed up Thursday, not having an extra body on hand in case of a late scratch. (Crazy It’s not like that hasn’t happened three times before this season) Otherwise their situation hasn’t changed and the same reason they had for not having Smith in Dallas would still exist today. But we’ll see.

Consider this. Let’s say Campoli is sick and can’t make the bus to the building tonight; the Hawks would be short a defenseman. And Bowman would be criticized even more. With the Smith recall, the Hawks are down to 3 recalls for the rest of the year due to league rules post-trade deadline. So he could be up for a bit.

I’d wonder about Pisani. He was checked pretty hard in Dallas. Call ups typically don’t sniff the special teams so if Smith gets in he’ll either be on a line with Dowell or Johnson. If it was me, I’d put him with Dowell. Smith is right-handed and is pretty decent on faceoffs. Putting him with Johnson would be a bit of a waste knowing Johnson would take all the draws no matter where they are on the ice.

      • actually two defenseman if you take into account Scott! while I realize Q has no faith to play him in the third, big john did not look all that bad. it was kind of nice seeing a behenoth patrol the front of the crease for us.

i thought Pisani played well last night – I think the main ingredient in the win was staying out of the box. Looks like Smith will be in against the Panthers.
