Chasing points stinks.   You’re fully aware of this because chasing wins from goalies in fantasy hockey or W’s from starting pitchers in fantasy baseball can be maddening. One of the follies fantasy hockey players might run into at this time of the year, at least for those of you in standard roto leagues (where there are games played limitations), is balancing chasing those points and trying to maintain your league’s games played pace. It’s even more difficult to restrain yourself if you find your drafted heroes well behind the leaders in your league’s current standings. Read more »

The content will largely remain the usual moderately useful quality, but this week’s edition will likely appear more truncated due to the present author’s illness. Quite honestly I intended to sandbag this week’s edition and totally blow it off, but no sooner than five minutes after I intimated there would be no post this week, a heavy fisted knock from the front door revealed TTMI’s shadowy overlord, Chris Block, shorn to toe in nothing but a tunic and 24 eye black Doc Martens combat boots (feel free to burn that image into your mental hard drive), and his soupbones heavily taped. “No post this week, eh?”….while waiving heavily wrapped soupbones in a menacing manner. Let’s just get this over with. Read more »

For those of you TTMI readers that have been riding Brock Nelson since we demanded that you do so dating back in the preseason, congrats. He has received his first crack at the top line which should only improve his stock. You may have to consider holding onto him at least until the Isles decide to move a struggling forward into his slot to give a random player a forced jumpstart with Tavares and Okposo.   Chances are Nelson, Anders Lee, and Grabovski will spend the forthcoming months bouncing around the top six, but so long as Nelson is riding shotgun with Tavares and Okposo, he’s a must start. We’re now moving past the 10% of the season completed mark for some teams and it should become easier to filter out the pretenders on the waiver wire for you in standard 10-12 team leagues. If you’re in a 12 team league that rolls three lines those defenseman options on waivers are looking pretty ugly, aren’t they? Hope you snagged Vatanen, Boychuk, or Brodie!   We’ll cover the second wave of blueline options that you can consider below.   That said, the hot starts are petering out. The established players with a track record like noted Chris Block Perpetual Interference/Obstruction Running Hero, Hank Zetterberg, are producing again (someone might want to remind Toews and Hossa, though). So you’re kind of upset that you spent a first or second round pick on a goalie like Lundquist, Rask, Price, or Varlamov and they’ve let you down thus far. It happens. Small samples, perhaps new equipment, new system, or new defensemen in front of them and all. You’ll be fine…except maybe in Varlamov’s case because he wasn’t going to replicate last season’s ratios with that blueline in front of him and now the groin thing. Hey, I didn’t want to take Varlamov in the TTMI League, myself. Stupid Chris Stupid Block forced me to.   Don’t worry, the shadowy overlord of TTMI is facing karma’s wrath by taking Cory Schneider a pick ahead of me and subsequently struggling to 5, 3, and 4 goals allowed in 3 of his last 5 starts.  A ha. Fantasy Chatter: Analysis and Week 2 advice

Hopefully you’re not one of those panicky owners who has been dropping solid middle round quality players that have an extended track record of production for bottom pairing quality players who happen to get off to a quick start. Make sure you’re checking player usage if you are one of those people.

For example, Olli Maatta is a hot pickup right now after his 3 assist performance against the Ducks in the opener, and he may end up being solid this season, but if you look at his usage, he’s only accrued 1 shift on the PP for all of 24 seconds. Read more »

Fantasy Chatter~Premiere: Part 2 – Hawk Factors and Goalie Wars

Goldblum_Kroll

Part One of this feature ran earlier today.

For the introduction – Fantasy Chatter: Undervalues and Deep Cuts

By Lane Myer

FANTASY ‘HAWK FACTOR

Not much in the way of undervalued Blackhawks this season unless Teuvo Koivu captures a top 6 role due to injury, or Jeremy Morin skates top 9 minutes all season long.   Nick Leddy would normally be a trendy target to peg for a break out season should he happen to come upon top 4 pairing minutes and a wealth of  PP opportunities, but it seems like Leddy may be bumped off of the second PP unit in favor of Richards and Seabrook if recent events come to fruition.   Perhaps an ill-advised trade is forthcoming which may in turn bump Leddy’s value back to where it should be.

The wildcard would have to be Brandon Saad.  See Breakout Candidates section above.   If there is one Hawk, health provided, who should easily out earn his draft position, it’s Saad.

Patrick Kane is typically overvalued in fantasy drafts by a round or two each year, but he’s a reliable star who sparingly misses games.   There is value in certainty.   Read more »

Fantasy Chatter: TTMI’s 2014 Fantasy Hockey Primer: Part One – Undervalues and Deep Cuts

TheLeagueFX

Today we’re launching a new feature on the site – Fantasy Chatter.

That’s a working title. It’s what I could come up with at 3am on a Friday. This is an idea that’s been tossed around and has a few years of rust over it. But two year’s too late is how I’ve operated most of my life. Better late than never, though. At least here.

With the start of the NHL season less than a week away, we know a lot of folks have fantasy drafts right around the corner. Even if you’ve already picked your team, fantasy vets know it’s the roster moves you make along the way that separates the pretenders from the contenders.

So with that I’ve enlisted Lane Myer, who has been putting me to shame in our various TTMI Fantasy Hockey Leagues over five seasons now. Lane has emailed me after a live draft, mocking some of my prized selections. He’s lived to tell about it (because we’ve never physically met) and has now even parlayed that into a weekly space here on the site. And hopefully it will be both insightful and beneficial to our readers, whether you’re a fantasy player or not. I’m excited about this feature and the potential it brings to involve more ongoing statistical analysis and player prospectus on the site.

Before I turn it over to Lane, I do want to make mention that we have still have a few spots open in a TTMI league we are Live Drafting this Monday night at 9pm. If you’re interested, contact me at ChrisBlock@TheThirdManIn.com – we’d be glad to have you aboard and you can shame me too. –Chris Block

Note: Part two of this week’s Fantasy Chatter, Hawk Factors and Goalie Wars, will reveal here at noon Friday 10/3.

For a brief introduction, I’m Lane, and Chris has asked me if I wouldn’t possibly maybe mind writing a weekly fantasy hockey column for TTMI.  All you need to know is that I’m no expert but I do have a pretty good track record.   Probably luck, but if Block wants to point out that my current 87% Yahoo League performance rating is way better than yours – that’s ok, I guess.  I’m basically just the only guy who didn’t say no. Largely because the pay is decent.

This first post will not be a typical TTMI fantasy article.  They will not be this long in the future.   Read more »

TTMI~Fantasy Hockey Leagues 2011-12

Returning invites went out last night to everyone who participated in either of our fantasy hockey league’s last season.  If you were in one of our leagues last year and did not receive the email invite, please notify me immediately to secure your spot.

I expect several openings, so if you’re interested in joining and managing your own team against myself and other TTMI readers/listeners – act fast.

I’m required to tell you these are not money pools, our leagues are for fun only.  We run on the Yahoo! NHL Fantasy format which has proven reliable and easy to navigate.  We’re running live interactive drafts on Monday night, October 3.

So, if you want to join, shoot me an email at the address listed below and I’ll get you the info to sign up.  It’s a fun, supplemental way to track the league during the season.  And you’ll probably whip my ass.  So there you go….
