TTMI’s Trade Central

Week two of the run-up to the trade deadline revealed…nothing. Not even a minor trade involving a role player. Even the rumor mongering from respectable insider types was largely hushed aside from some speculation that Bruins’ GM Peter Chiarelli could be on the outs if Boston were to miss the playoffs. That led to some new names allegedly hitting the trade block including Zdeno Chara, Loui Eriksson, Malcom Subban and Dennis Seidenberg. Seidenberg is largely irrelevant for fantasy purposes and I think there is next to no chance Chara moves before the draft. I’m also putting little weight into Jordan Staal’s return to Pittsburgh rumors. Read more »

It’s a busy NHL schedule (save for Arizona) this week with the rare 5 game schedule for the Islanders (get all your Islander players into your weekly lineup), as well as 17 other teams set for 4 games each this week. That of course provides a multitude of goalie streaming opportunities if one is in need of goalie counting stats. Of particular note, should your league be of standard size, Carolina has two back to back sets of games this week which should translate to Cam Ward and Anton Khudobin splitting those starts. For those in leagues where Andrei Vasilevskiy isn’t owned, he makes a nice late week pickup with Tampa facing a back to back in Colorado and Arizona. Also of note, Eddie Lack should face the offensively challenged New Jersey Devils next weekend as well. Read more »

With three weeks before the NHL trade deadline, the mix of possible trade targets will begin to become a little clearer over the next 7-10 days. Thus next week we’ll take a closer look at some of the players who are relevant for fantasy purposes that also may already be on your league’s waiver wire. The object here of course is to target players such as David Perron who was irrelevant in Edmonton this season and dropped to waivers in about 70% of leagues. He then became immediately addable after the trade to Pittsburgh and a plush role on the Crosby line. Read more »

With 13 NHL teams scheduled for four game slates this week it’s a prime opportunity to engage in some goalie streaming by checking back to back schedules. Unfortunately, for the those owners that need to protect your goalie ratio stats, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend too many of these opportunities given the teams that are scheduled for back to back games this week, really only the Rangers with Cam Talbot, the Sharks with Alex Stalock, and presumably the Lightning with Andre Vasilevskiy look like appealing choices. If you’re in a head to head league and can afford to roll the dice a bit more with your ratio stats, this is a good week to do so. Read more »

In recent vintage we’ve covered first half over and underachievers as well as TTMI’s Top 50 Keeper/Dynasty League Under 25 Rankings for those fledgling teams who are looking towards next season and have no alternative other than undergoing a rebuild.

Hopefully the amount on goalie info won’t be quite as daunting and time consuming as it was this week, so we hope to concentrate on those owners in redraft leagues who are in the middle of the pack in their respective league’s standings and need to start making their move now with some high risk/high reward trade targets. By that measure we’re talking about selling high on some first half over performers and targeting first half underperformers who may be primed for a second half market correction. Read more »

We’ve officially reached the midway point for all but four NHL teams. That makes for a good point to reflect back on some draft maladies and which players have killed your standing. Thus here are the top 25 over and underachievers in fantasy hockey arbitrarily ranked in an undisclosed (read: highly convoluted) method that contains a mix of ADP in relation to their current ranking in standard size leagues as well as factoring in how much these particular players have probably murdered some key stat categories, again for standard category leagues.

We’ve omitted players who suffered low rankings due to injury such as Patrick Sharp or Zdeno Chara, though not a guy like Alex Semin who has been injured, healthy scratched, and terrible. Read more »

As we foreshadowed two weeks ago, here is our maiden entry in the keeper or dynasty league sphere. We’ve ranked the top 50 players 25 years old or younger to perhaps use as a guide for those of you in keeper or dynasty leagues that will be undergoing a rebuild, or continuing to rebuild your roster for the forthcoming seasons.

If you’re a hardcore fantasy baseball player, you may be aware of the 500 inning plateau for young starting pitchers. Meaning that around 500 innings banked at the major league level, you begin to see what a starter is capable of…on average.   Data fluctuates a bit more wildly for hockey, but among NHL level defensemen, you start to see a similar maturation around their third to fourth and into their fifth professional season. This can be seen in Hawkland with Duncan Keith who was a 30 point player in his third year. He then jumped to a 44 point player in his fourth season and then soared to an elite level in his fifth year when he recorded 69 points en route to his first Norris Trophy. It was also true for Brian Campbell who rose to a 62 point season in his fifth full season.

With forwards the data is a little trickier. Some data suggests a forward peaks at 25, while some believe it’s anywhere from age 22 to 25. This is primarily why we’re keeping our requirements at age 25. Obviously this will vary wildly in terms of age range. Max Pacioretty broke out in his fourth year, but in those previous three seasons, he accrued essentially a season and a half’s worth of games. Then you look at a guy like Joe Pavelski who spent his first seven seasons becoming a prototypical second line center only to break out as an elite level first line scorer at age 29. Read more »

Fantasy Chatter: Week 13, Down Goes Mike Smith (again), and a Favorable Blackhawks Remaining Schedule

The NHL predictably ramped up the post-Christmas schedule with all 30 organ-i-zations playing at least 3 games this week. The schedule also includes a heavy dose of 4 gamers, and 19 back to back tilts. Hence it’s another good week to stream some backup goalies if you’re still in need of making up some ground in your league’s goalie counting stats.

With Montreal engaging in two sets of back to back contests this week, Dustin Tokarski would seem like the best pickup. Sadly for goalie streamers, there is already some speculation that Carey Price may be in goal for both back to back nights to open the week given that Montreal has had almost a week off, and Price has started all 10 of Montreal’s December games. This holiday week will obviously be a slow one in fantasyland with only five clubs set to play more than two games. If your head-to-head league scores this week as one stand alone week, make sure you have enough starts in goal to meet your weekly minimum requirement. If you play in a league where rosters lock on Monday, it’s a good week to sit all Montreal players you own in lieu of their one game schedule. If you need to add a goalie start off the wire for the week, the backup situation is pretty light given the choices of Bryzgalov, Dubnyk, Hutton, Greiss or Justin Peters.   On paper the best bet may have been Thomas Greiss who would seem a good choice to face Florida while Fleury grabs the Lightning matchup the following night, but Greiss was ill this past week and has undergone testing for mumps. So he may not even be available. Read more »
