Odds and Saads: Notes on weekend, Sharp, Richards; Dylan Olsen MIA, Hayden’s suspension, the Stevie Moses sweepstakes and much more

By Chris Block

Big weekend starts tonight as both the Blackhawks and Rockford IceHogs are in action twice this weekend.

Blackhawks host Colorado at the UC tonight. I’m on recap duty for this one so that should be fun.   The Boston Bruins then come to town on Sunday afternoon for what should be another entertaining game against a top Eastern Conference opponent, the third in eight days at home for the Hawks.

Rockford is in Cleveland this weekend for a two-game set Friday and Saturday against the Lake Erie Monsters, who are the Colorado Avalanche minor league affiliate. The IceHogs missed out on an opportunity to move back into first place in the MidWest division on Wednesday when they were shut-out at home by San Antonio, 4-0. The IceHogs were terrible in that game until the third period when they outshot San Antonio 20-5, but by then it was far too late. Later that night Milwaukee earned a point in an OT loss at Grand Rapids, so Milwaukee sits 2 points up on Rockford. Both teams have played 52 games at this point, though Milwaukee is idle tonight.

–I was absolutely crushed Sunday morning as I walked into the United Center and got the news that Steve Montador had passed away overnight.  Montador was 35.

I covered wrestling for many years and became good friends with guys who would go on to die at an early age or take their own life, but now that I’m a bit older, you get a different feeling when someone dies young whose just a shade younger than you.

I had the pleasure of covering Montador in Rockford and speaking with him in his time with the organization. He was just honest and passionate about the game when we spoke. He was just a great person. That’s all there really is to say.  Its sad that his career ended the way it did and again now that he’s gone.

Odds and Saads: Whole Lotta Rosie?, Dent talks Teuvo; notes on signings, Chicago Stadium and Coliseum; great moments in Florida Panthers history and more

By Chris Block

Michal Rozsival hopes to be an everyday player again in Chicago. [Mark Lazerus, Sun-Times] Rozsival is expected to make his season debut Saturday in Nashville.

–Blackhawks have added Mike Sullivan to the player development staff. He most recently had been John Tortorella’s assistant for seven seasons. TTMI story here.

–If you haven’t, check in with our new Fantasy Hockey guru Lane Myer.

–Our detailed recap of Rockford’s 3-2 opening night loss to Milwaukee. Following up on the response to the paragraphs on T.J. Brennan, his $600,000 one-way deal is the reason the Islanders wanted him included in the deal. Brennan wasn’t going to make the Isles with Leddy and Boychuk around and the Isles didn’t want to spend that money on him as a player in Bridgeport.

In Brennan, Peter Regin and Drew LeBlanc alone, Stan Bowman has $1.825M in guaranteed NHL salary in Rockford right now. He had substantially more than that in the past when Steve Montador and Rostislav Olesz were stashed away in the AHL. The Hawks minor league team has become akin to a money pit since 2011.  You get the impression the Hawks have no plans for Brennan.

–Other notes reported from practice: Marian Hossa sat out practice today but will play Wednesday vs the Flames. Kris Versteeg could start skating this weekend and Joel Quenneville is disgusted with his third line so far. Read more »

Odds and Saads; Stephen Johns signing notes, Hartman debuts; Bollig, Raanta, Blackhawks and IceHogs bits

By Chris Block

This is way later than I targeted for this week, but better late than never.  Today was my first chance to get to this.  And just in time now to start working on next week’s… Anyhow, on with it.

Stephen Johns Signs

On Wednesday (April 2) the Chicago Blackhawks inked Notre Dame senior defenseman Stephen Johns to a two-year entry-level contract that will begin with the 2014-15 season.

Johns has also agreed to a professional try-out contract for the remainder of this season with the Rockford IceHogs.

He traveled with the IceHogs to Abbotsford, British Columbia on Thursday for Rockford’s big 2-game set with the Heat this weekend.

Johns is expected to make his professional debut tonight in Abbotsford.  It looks like he’ll wear number #36, which was Maxim Shalunov’s number earlier in the season. Read more »

Odds and Saads: Morin’s shot, Teuvo plan, Carey signing, Hartman, Johns and more

By Chris Block

MORIN’s OPPORTUNITY

Don’t wait for the IceHogs’ leading goal scorer to be back in Rockford, at least for the time being.

Jeremy Morin was told he is up with the Blackhawks for the remainder of the season.

So, unless there is some major change in direction, don’t expect him to be back in Rockford before then, if ever.

I suppose there is a chance he’d return to Rockford in the event the IceHogs team makes the playoffs and the Blackhawks are healthy enough to the point Morin slides down the depth chart far enough.  But that would also have to mean Teuvo Teravainen would play outstanding enough that the Blackhawks would no longer care about burning a year on Teravainen’s slide-eligible entry level contract – which contrary to what is being insinuated publically, they are not planning to do so at this time.

–In case you missed it last week, Odds and Saads will be a weekly feature here on TheThirdManIn.com.  This is part one of two for this week.

TEUVO TIME

Teuvo Teravainen will make his NHL regular season debut for the Blackhawks when they host the Dallas Stars at the United Center. Read more »

Odds and Saads: Teravainen, Future Watch

By Chris Block

I’ve been meaning to cook up something of a weekly feature here on the site as a way of producing more regular content.  Given Monday is a notable day in this site’s history, I am finally putting that into action now with “Odds and Saads.”  My plan is for this to be a late-Sunday night for Monday thing.

The title really is more influenced by The Who album having a good ring to it as this is designed to be a freeform random thoughts and news kind of thing.  It’ll mostly be Blackhawks focused, of course, but it will not be bound by Hawks topics.

-Wanted to thank everyone who complimented the podcasts with HockeeNight and The Committed Indian last week.

If you missed it, I was on “Live from the Five Hole” with Sam and Matt from TheCommittedIndian.com site last Friday.  My segment was taped Monday night, the 10th.

You can listen to it here.  I join the show about 12 minutes in and my portion is about a half hour long.  It was mostly a discussion of prospects in Rockford, prospect development and the Brandon Pirri situation.  Read more »
