Lindbloom’s View: A Cure for the Blues

Lindbloom_2014May01_KottkeThe Armadillo Album-
A cure for the blues

“While grief is fresh, every attempt to divert only irritates it.” – Samuel Johnson

By Rich Lindbloom

While watching the Blues vs Hawks in Game Five on Friday, a friend came up to me and asked, “You really hate the Blues, don’t you?” I smiled and said, “There is no team in the NHL I like watching the Hawks trounce more. The Blues and their fans are a bunch of slithering, fire breathing heathens.” When the Hawks emerge victorious in these contests it’s my, “I love the smell of napalm in the morning,” moment. At that point, the world just flat out begins to make sense.

Oddly though, my antipathy for the Blue Notes and their followers abated with a few minutes to go in Sunday’s Game Six clincher. Read more »

Lindbloom’s View: Cement Shoes

Seabrook_LindbloomsView_2014Apr25St. Louis’ Public Enemy #1 – Brent (Alphonse) Seabrook

By Rich Lindbloom

Patrick (Joey bag o’donuts) Kane, leader of the renowned Chicago Outfit, and his associates prevailed in the 3rd overtime contest of this rather impolite Quarter Final Slug-athon. Kaner’s ICBM ripped into the twine behind Ryan Miller, puncturing the hopeful souls of the Blue’s faithful. As the clock approached midnight, their glass slippers were shattered into a thousand pieces.

Consequently, the Best-of-Seven series has now been reduced to a Best-of-Three series. Kaner was pretty much black magic all night long, slotting in with last year’s bunkmate’s, Tazer and Bickell. Coach Ken Hitchcock was none too pleased with the space and time Crazy 88’s had in Game Four.  Read more »

Lindbloom’s View: The birds and the bees

image(2)The Facts of Hockey

“And i’m not the kind that likes to tell you
Just what you want me to
You’re not the kind that needs to tell me
About the birds and the bees.” – New Order

[editor's note: This piece was written & submitted prior to Game 2: CHI-STL]

Admit it guys. One of the most awkward moments in life is when your father, (or worse yet, some of the knuckleheads you hung out with), explained to you the facts of life. You know, the “you put the lime in the coconut…” talk. The moment when sneak peeks at Playboy started to replace the memorization Luis Aparicio’s batting average or Gary Peter’s ERA. (I’m sure I lost a few  readers under the age of 40 recalling those former White Sox greats!) Read more »

Lindbloom’s View: Natural born lover man

Morin_Jeremy_Lindbloom_viewJeremy Morin flashes the Vulcan gang sign to Bicks

“After a time, you may find that having is not so pleasing a thing, after all, as wanting.” – Spock

By Rich Lindbloom

After Tazer went down to an illegal hit by known Penguin assassin Brooks Orpik, the inner meatball button in me was triggered. Winning the hockey game became secondary to exacting just retribution on the nozzle who obviously was attempting to injure Tazer. I heard several Hawk players defend their lack of response by saying , “It was a 2-1 game and we didn’t want to take a penalty…” type excuse. Apparently there were no mirrors in their locker room in Pittsburgh. Read more »

Lindbloom’s View: The conversation box

Lindbloom_2014Mar29_BambiSkates“Are you the new second line center?” – Thumper

“If you can’t say something nice,
don’t say nothing at all.” – The Thumperian Principle

By Rich Lindbloom

I’m not sure why I’m even bothering to write another synopsis of the vicissitudes of Blackhawk hockey. According to the criminally insane, the Hawks season is officially over after getting trounced against Boston and Ottawa. The malicious maelstrom of fans voicing their discontent with the Blackhawks the last two games has reached disturbing heights.

I like to go to the ESPN NHL Hockey Scoreboard each night to see how my Fantasy players are doing. I click on the box score of all the games to keep track of all the goings on. One box I’ve never checked is the Conversation box, so on a whim I clicked it after Friday’s game. Talk about Pandora’s box! Read more »

Lindbloom’s View: It’s Teuvo Time

Lindbloom_SuperTeuvo_2014Mar25(credit to:  )

By Rich Lindbloom

“Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. Yes it’s Superteravainen, strange visitor from another planet, with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men! Superteravainen, who can change the course of mighty rivers, play #2 center for the Hawks, bend steel in his bare hands, and who, disguised as Patrick Kane, a mild mannered forward for a great metropolitan hockey team, fights a never ending battle for truth, justice and the American way.” Read more »

Lindbloom’s View: Hey, hey, Tow them away

Lindbloom_2014Mar2JulieAndrewsTime to put on your inner Julie Andrews.

“I should be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the road less travelled by,
And that has made all the difference. – Robert Frost

By Rich Lindbloom

I heard Lynyrd Skynard’s Free Bird playing on two different stations Thursday morning on my way into work. That was a very good way to describe how I felt after the Hawks dismantling of the team with the best record in hockey. But I just couldn’t get the image or song, The U. C. is Alive with the Sound of Music, out of my head. At 10 pm on Wednesday, I felt pretty and witty and gay! I was perched firmly on Cloud Nine. I know a lot of you would have picked Free Bird, however, much like Robert Frost I took the road less travelled; consequently, I have been trying to figure out where I am ever since. Read more »

Lindbloom’s View: Everything Means Less Than Zero

Lindbloom_RedPads“You know the angels wanna wear my red pads…”

“Oh I used to be disgusted
And now I try to be amused.
But since their wings have gotten rusted,
You know, the angels wanna wear my red shoes.” – Elvis Costello

By Rich Lindbloom

Well, at least the mystery has been solved in regards to Crow’s red goalie pads.

In an effort to spur the growth of hockey in the United Kingdom, Elvis was allegedly seen in Crawford’s pads at a recent performance in London. It crossed my mind this week that you never hear anything about hockey in the UK. And this is a country that at one time conquered most of the known world. Truly unacceptable. Read more »
