Lindbloom’s View: The Best of What’s Around

Lindbloom_Img01_2013Mar05I’m a believer

“In war, you win or lose, live or die – and the difference is just an eyelash.” – Douglas MacArthur

By Rich Lindbloom

No, that is not a picture of Sam Fels’s family room wall. Actually, it’s my daughter Taylor’s bedroom wall– nothing like a little Blackhawk paraphernalia to brighten up a room! I had to laugh one day when Nathalie looked at the wall and asked, “What have you done to her?” The wall of fame contains rally towels, ticket stubs, Jonathan Toews pictures, more Jonathan Toews pictures and an assortment of other Hawk items. These items eventually replaced a huge foldout of Mark Bell, the 8th pick in the 1998 draft. I remember her asking me, as we drove home from the game that they gave the Bell poster away, if he was any good. I told her yes and the next day it was up on the wall in the room. Sigh…I miss my hockey bud. Read more »

Lindbloom: Let’s Do This Thing

Elmore James got nothing on me

“Well, I’m going down,
Down, down, down, down, down
I’m going down
Down, down, down, down, down
I’ve got my head out the window
And my big feet on the ground.” – Jeff Beck

By Rich Lindbloom

For those of you who’ve never heard Jeff Beck’s classic song “Going Down,” you-tube it. I guarantee, momentarily at least, the sun will shine in your back door. Initially the “bass” player for the Jimmy Page led Yardbirds, Beck’s inimitable guitar work soon became readily recognizable over the air waves. It always amazes me how many different sounds various guitar players coax out of their instruments. “Going down,” actually escaped from the cobwebs when the Hawks plunged in the standings during the 9 game losing streak. After a false summit, that had many gleefully hopping back on the band wagon, we once again appear to be heading in the wrong direction. Read more »

Hawks lose two points in 3rd period, Stars win 3-1

By Jon Fromi

The Chicago Blackhawks saw their four-game winning streak come to an end Thursday night in the United Center. Forty minutes of defensive dominance gave way to an opportunistic Dallas Stars club that outworked the Blackhawks in the final ten minutes and stunned the home team by a score of 3-1.

Rookie goalie Richard Bachman got the start for the Stars and proved to be the difference, keeping his team in the contest with 26 saves and allowing Dallas to snatch two points from the Blackhawks.

Neither team generated a lot of scoring chances in the opening period. The ‘Hawks continued to play well in their own zone, but only outshot the Stars 6-5. Read more »

Cullimore to Germany, Saad declines invite, Hawks cap position

Jassen Cullimore
will skate in Germany this season.

On Monday, Cullimore signed with the Iserlohn Roosters of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL).  Cullimore will join the team for training camp next month.  The Roosters’ season begins on September 16.  He joins goaltender Manny Legace and former Rockford IceHogs’ defenseman Prestin Ryan on the Iserlohn team.  Iserlohn [IEC] missed the playoffs last season and finished 12th out of 14 DEL teams.  Cullimore turns 39 in December.

While re-signing Cullimore was never a sure-thing, this does leave an important hole on the IceHogs’ defense.

Right now their top five is Ryan Stanton, Brian Connelly, Joe Lavin, Dylan Olsen and Shawn Lalonde.  With the exception of Stanton, Rockford’s defense, as currently constructed, is at best modest in their responsibilities south of the offensive blue line.  Simon Danis-Pepin is in the mix as well, but his skating was still barely AHL-level in April.  Rockford will need a veteran shut-down defenseman.  Connelly can now be considered a vet on the offensive side, but he can’t mind Lalonde in the defensive zone and you really shouldn’t count on Olsen to do that just yet, at least to start the season.  Read more »
