Special Audio: Tim Sassone Tribute podcast with Chris Kuc, Brian Hedger, Al Cimaglia and Lindsey Willhite

Sassone_Foley_Savard_461x334

By Chris Block

On Wednesday, I was honored to be joined by four friends of the late, great 25-year veteran of the Chicago Blackhawks beat, Tim Sassone.

Sassone was 58 when he succumbed to illness on March 25, 2014.

53 weeks from that day, his friends, former colleagues and competitors assembled to pay tribute to Sassone, one of the greatest sports writers Chicago has known.

I am joined by Al Cimaglia [Sirius/XM Radio] and Brian Hedger [NHL.com] for the bulk of the show. Cimaglia and Hedger swap stories of Sassone’s influence and generosity, while sharing their personal experiences and thoughts on the man each called a friend.

Then I welcome Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune, Sassone’s closest friend on the Blackhawks beat. Kuc and Sassone worked alongside each other from 2007 up until Tim’s passing.

For the first ten minutes of his segment, Kuc helps us dissect the big news of Wednesday. We discuss Patrick Kane participating in his first Blackhawks practice since fracturing his collar bone five weeks ago, and speculate as to what Kane’s timetable for return looks like now.

Then, Kuc shares his experiences working alongside his great friend.

Hedger and Cimaglia stay with me a give their reactions to Kuc’s comments and more on Sassone at and away from the rinks.

Finally, I sit down with Lindsey Willhite, formerly a teammate of Sassone’s at the Daily Herald. Lindsey is now the Public Relations Director for the Chicago Wolves. He shares his experiences meeting and learning under Sassone, following Tim around the day the Blackhawks won the 2010 Stanley Cup in Philadelphia and the time he answered Sassone’s desk phone at the Daily Herald offices and it was Jeremy Roenick on the other end of the line.

In closing, I give my thoughts on the impact Tim Sassone had on me and talk about having the opportunity to work alongside him myself and my regret in the last interaction I had with Tim.

PuckChatter~Radio; e.142, Crusaders of the Lost Podcast, A Blackhawks Chat and a Special Flashback Steve Montador Interview

By Chris Block

It took six, long months but PuckChatter~Radio returned Thursday night for 90 minutes of Hawky Talk just the way you like it. Or, not.

Over the course of the initial 80 minutes, Al Cimaglia of Sirius/XM Radio joined me to breakdown the Blackhawks trade deadline action in the wake of Patrick Kane’s broken collarbone. We discussed how the Hawks stack up now against the West, the handling of Teuvo Teravainen as well as various comments those in the organization have made about Teuvo and evaluated Stan Bowman’s past year.

In the past two months, Stan Bowman has traded 2 prospects who were formerly ranked in the Top 20 of the Blackhawks 2015 Prospect Rankings. We discussed the rate of return those players help yield and the history of the Hawks and how they’ve managed their prospects.

Finally, we replay an April 2, 2013 interview I did with the late Steve Montador.

*We had technical difficulties with the audio at two points during the live recording. This file was edited in post-production. I’ve uploaded the edited file to BlogTalkRadio as well, but some may have gotten the first version, which wasn’t too terrible (for our low standards) but we had a soundboard drop at the start of the show and Al and I both had our sound drop somewhere near the halfway mark. I cleaned those spots up afterwards.  The Montador interview was clipped about thirty seconds early in the original recording too, for some reason.  Intro and outro audio was added and edited in this second version.

**As mentioned on the show, we will return soon with a special podcast on a yet to be determined date and time.

Puck Chatter~Radio, Road to the 2014-15 Blackhawks

By Chris Block

Al Cimaglia and I joined forces through the technologies Monday night to produce the first podcast this site has managed to push through in months.

Over the course of the hour we discussed some things.  I couldn’t hear some of it, myself.  The good news is, you can hear all of Al just fine.

You can listen through your web browser by punching the play button below.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Or, you can download the MP3 file at this link.

The show is also available for immediate download at the ITunes store in the podcast section.  Just type Third Man In into the search field and we pop right up.  I just checked because even I was wondering if we were still there.

If I can determine what’s causing the persistent clicking sounds and audio cutting out that only I hear on my end we’ll do another show next Monday night.

If not, I’ll be the guest on HockeeNight’s PuckCast on Sunday night to analyze the moves the Blackhawks made to get salary cap compliant and continue previewing the season there as well.

PuckChatter~Radio; Al Cimaglia guests Talkin’ the 2013 Stanley Cup Champions

By Chris Block

Al Cimaglia of MyFoxChicago.com and Sirius/XM Radio joined me Wednesday night on PuckChatter~Radio to review the Chicago Blackhawks run to their 2nd Stanley Cup in the past 4 seasons.

Over the course of this 60 minute podcast, Al and I outline the turning points and pivotal factors in the Blackhawks playoff run, climaxing with Monday night’s clinching Game 6 victory in Boston.  We also look at the toll some player’s endured in the battle for Lord Stanley’s chalice and how much is too much; compliance buyouts, offer sheets, what awaits Bryan Bickell, what’s next for Stan Bowman and Joel Quenneville’s team, who won’t be back and some names that could also be on the move.

For a limited time, Molson’s Call of the Cup bottle series will be available throughout the Chicagoland area as in markets across the United States.

When you pick up Molson Canadian bottles now in the U.S., you can participate in The Call of the Cup series, which allows hockey fans to play the role of the coach and make the tough calls from their smart phones, or just debate the questions and scenarios on the back of the bottle labels between friends.

PuckChatter~Radio rings in 2013 with eternal optimism

By Chris Block

PuckChatter~Radio chimes in on the New Year appropriately today with a full breakdown of the latest in the NHL-NHLPA collective bargaining process as it dangerously draws near to the feared possibility of a 2012-13 season doomsday in the NHL cancelling its second full season in nine years.

Al Cimaglia of Sirius/XM Radio and MyFoxChicago.com joins the show to give his take on how and why the tumultuous negotiations have journeyed to this, in light of abound renewed optimism, still murky intersection.

We explore the final sticking points assumed to be the hindrances in preventing a deal to this point including the year-to-year salary variance percentage clause that has far-reaching ramifications that have gone unaddressed to this point.  We also examine the effectiveness of the “lower limit” salary cap clause and how, perhaps, that can be altered or used as leverage by the union to gain movement from the NHL on other sections of a new CBA.

All this and much, much more on a Lockout intensive PuckChatter~Radio.

Puck Chatter e.104, Al Cimaglia of MyFoxChicago.com

By Chris Block

Al Cimaglia of MyFoxChicago.com and Sirius/XM Radio joined me tonight for the latest edition of TheThirdManIn’s PuckChatter~Radio.

Al and I dissected the fallout from the Blackhawks second consecutive first round elimination, this time coming to the Phoenix Coyotes.

We analyzed what general manager Stan Bowman spotlighted as the areas his team faltered and also what he didn’t say.   We took a look at the supposed “core”, the Hawks’ inexcusable power play futility, Marian Hossa’s future, Phillip Danault, Dave Bolland, who is gone, Corey Crawford, if the goaltending should be upgraded and potential changes to the roster.

All this and much, much more in this sixty minute show.
