AUDIO: Interview with IceHogs coach Ted Dent

We were fortunate enough on Saturday to sit down with Rockford IceHogs’ head coach Ted Dent for a lengthy season-in-review discussion.

In this twenty-five minute interview, Dent shared his take on the gamut of subjects from coaching, to working in unison with Joel Quenneville and the Blackhawks coaching staff to the ups and down season his IceHogs experienced in this 2011-12 season.

Dent also gives his take on the state of Kyle Beach‘s progression, where he thinks Beach could be had it not been for missing four months due to shoulder surgery and if Dent has been surprised at all by the rapid ascension of Andrew Shaw.

Toews Returns but Coyotes Win Game 1 in OT 3-2

Jonathan Toews made an impressive return to the lineup Thursday as the Chicago Blackhawks opened their Western Conference Quarterfinal in Phoenix, tallying a goal and assist. Despite Toews and a late surge to the tie the contest, the Hawks succumbed in overtime as the Coyotes bested Chicago 3-2.

The Coyotes tried to establish a physical tone from the opening faceoff, but it was Andrew Shaw who registered a bit hit on Radim Vrbata that sent Phoenix’s leading goal scorer to the dressing room. Shaw had an open look on a rebound on the ensuing trip down the ice, but Coyotes goalie Mike Smith turned it away.

Toews got the scoring started with his play in the fourth minute. Gaining control of the puck behind the Phoenix net, the captain attempted to center to Patrick Kane. Toews wound up gathering in the failed connection and shoveled a backhand that escaped the grasp of Smith. At the 4:04 mark, the Blackhawks led 1-0. Read more »

The Angel of Playoff Death

“On that same night I will pass through Egypt and strike down every first born-both men and animals-and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the lord. The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are; and when I see the blood, I will pass over you.” – Exodus12: 12-13

And you thought Pharaoh Shanahan’s rulings were severe!

The Jewish Feast of Passover, so inextricably bound with Christianity, is one of the most incredible events I’ve ever pondered. The Readers Digest version is God rescues the descendants of Jacob from the intense persecution they were facing in Egypt. He accomplished this through an obedient servant, (a servant who initially tried to convince God he had the wrong man for the job), and a series of ten plagues. The last plague was the death of the first born throughout Egypt, unless the door posts were covered by the blood of a one year old male lamb, without defect. One of the most unique aspects of the Bible is it’s almost completely devoid of humor-although I would say that God’s command of finding a male without blemish comes about as close to humor as you can get. Blackhawks blow two-goal 3rd period lead in Detroit, win 3-2 in a shootout, finish 6th in West, await Pacific winner

The sixth and final meeting of the season between the Blackhawks and Red Wings went down to a shootout, where Patrick Kane scored the deciding goal to give the visiting ‘Hawks a 3-2 victory. Corey Crawford played a strong game, despite giving up a pair of third-period goals, and did not allow a goal in the shootout to register his 30th win of the season.

Detroit’s third period comeback secured one point in the standings, thereby sealing up either the fourth or fifth seed of the Western Conference and a first round match-up against Nashville.

Despite the two points, Chicago settled into the sixth spot with 101 points (45-26-11 record) on the season. They will open the playoffs on the road against the winner of the Pacific Division.

The game played much like the rest of the season series. Each game between the two Central Division rivals has been decided by one goal. It was the fourth time in six games that the final score was 3-2 and the fourth time Chicago came out victorious. The ‘Hawks ended up taking 10 of a possible 12 points out of the season series against the Wings with a 4-0-2 record. Read more »

Kane scores twice to force overtime, Blackhawks lose to Wild in a shootout

After clinching their fourth consecutive playoff appearance on Saturday night, the Chicago Blackhawks were back in action Sunday evening to face the playoff-eliminated Minnesota Wild.  The night earlier the Hawks blew a 4-0 lead to a Nashville Predators quad which the Hawks could see in the first round of the playoffs. The Hawks came out victors with a 5-4 win.  With a win Sunday, the Hawks could leap frog both the Predators and the Detroit Red Wings for 4th place in the Western conference.  The Hawks sat in 6th in the West with home ice advantage in sight.  The question is – Do the Hawks want to face the Wings or Preds in the first round?  With Jonathan Toews now cleared for contact, the good ship Blackhawk will be cruising, heading into the first round no matter which foe they encounter.  After Corey Crawford stole a Hawks win last night in the country music capital, Ray Emery started between the pipes for this match.  This would give Emery a chance to get some game action in, in case he is called upon during the playoffs.  Andrew Brunette was replaced by Michael Frolik as the top line winger.  Brunette was seen limping around the arena early Sunday.  He was later declared out with a lower body injury.  The Wild played the night before as well, beating the LA Kings in a shootout.  Josh Harding got the start for the Wild.  Duncan Keith was serving the last game of his five game suspension.  He will return to the line up on Thursday, when the Hawks travel to Minnesota to face the Wild.  Read more »

Hawks blow 4-goal lead then edge Preds 5-4

The Blackhawks gave up another two goal lead in the third period and lived to tell the tale, taking two points against the Predators in regulation with a 5-4 win in Nashville. Brent Seabrook tallied the go-ahead goal at 8:19 of the third period to give the ‘Hawks just their second win in six games against the Predators this season.

With the win, the Blackhawks clinched a playoff spot and drew even in the standings with Detroit (off Saturday, now has a game in hand on both teams) and one point behind Nashville for fourth in the Western Conference.

The first period featured action at both ends of the rink with Chicago leading 16-12 in the shot column. The Blackhawks struck first on an early power play opportunity when Patrick Sharp got a fortunate bounce off a defenseman at 3:25 of the first period. Sharp picked up a loose puck and attempted to cross it to Patrick Kane. The pass instead deflected off Hal Gill as he attempted to fill the lane and past Nashville goaltender Pekka Rinne to give Chicago the early 1-0 lead. Read more »

The Thrill Is Gone…

Ah, but the hatred is alive and well. With the emergence of the rum dummies on the western side of the Mississippi, otherwise known as the Blues, our rivalry with a team that personifies the word “malfeasance” had been put on the back burner. To be quite honest with you, with the arduous schedule we’ve had in March, I didn’t even get that worked up about playing the Canucks last Wednesday. This was a bit unusual when one recalls for the past three years these affairs have more resembled terrorism than hockey. They’ve always been a highly sought after ticket. After about two minutes of watching this battle royale, I quickly recalled what fuels one of hockey’s best rivalries. My complete and utter disdain for the blue and green men returned with a vengeance. Read more »

Hawks slip by Canucks in OT, Duncan Keith faces possible suspension for elbow on Daniel Sedin

On a four game winning streak, the Chicago Blackhawks returned home to face their favourite foe, the Vancouver Canucks.  The Hawks were in Columbus the night before, handing the Jackets a season sweep with a 5-1 victory.  The Canucks had the luxury of spending a record setting hot March day in Chicago awaiting the Hawks return home late morning.   After going on a 9 game losing streak the Hawks have gone 8-1-1.  Most of those games have been played without captain serious, as he remains on the road to recovery.   The Canucks come into this game losers of five in seven.   Corey Crawford regained his crease for the Hawks and Roberto Luongo started for the visiting team.  Luongo hasn’t played in the Canucks last two losses.  Jamal Mayers was a last minute scratch with the flu inserting Brendan Morrison into the 4th line center spot.  Read more »

‘The Gray Line’ tearing it up

Serendipity: an aptitude for making desirable discoveries by accident. Good luck, good fortune.

Going 8-1-1 in the last 10 games, with Tazer still trying to count to ten, might add new meaning to the word serendipity. Not even the most optimistic Blackhawk fan could have expected the good luck and fortune that have been our allies over the last couple of weeks. Are you kidding me; Andrew Shaw has two shots bounce off various parts of his body for goals in the last two games? After struggling mightily in January and February between the pipes, are beleaguered goalies are named #1 (Emery) and #3 (Crow) Players of the Week the last two weeks in the NHL? (That’s got to be an oxymoron or something.) Johnny Oduya, acquired in the 11th hour of the trade deadline, suddenly anchors the aft end of a listing defense? Temperatures hovering around 80 in mid-March? Before I get into the “full speed ahead” portion of this article, I’d like to tell you about a serendipitous moment that happened in the Orcas Islands in the Puget Sound. Read more »

Hawks Score Early and Often, Sweep Season Series with Columbus

The Chicago Blackhawks visited the doormat that is the Columbus Blue Jackets Tuesday night. The Blackhawks had not dropped a contest to the visiting Blue Jackets all season, and a strong effort in the opening minutes paved the way for an easy 5-1 victory.

Chicago took control of the contest in the fifth minute when Bryan Bickell went to the corner for a loose puck, won the ensuing battle, and threw the puck off of the appropriately positioned Andrew Shaw and into the Columbus net. Shaw got the credit for the goal and the ‘Hawks led 1-0 just 4:12 into the game.

Patrick Sharp doubled that lead two minutes later after Viktor Stalberg found him in the corner just short of the goal line. Sharp let fly with a shot that caromed off of goalie Steve Mason and in to make it 2-0 with just 6:17 gone in the opening period. Read more »
