Crawford vs Carolina Hurricanes Ends in 3-1 Blackhawks Win

By Jon Fromi

It was a true goalie win for the Chicago Blackhawks Monday night in Charlotte. Corey Crawford made 43 saves against the Carolina Hurricanes on a night where the Hawks spent a lot of time in their own zone. Chicago mustered enough offense in the first ten minutes to come away with a 3-1 victory.

First Period-Carolina got an early power play (the only one for either team, as it turned out) when Marcus Kruger held Elias Lindholm 1:34 into the game. Lindholm got off a shot late in the man advantage that Crawford sent away but Chicago prevented any further trouble.

The Blackhawks were held without a shot for most of the first eight minutes. However, the first shot wound up in the back of the Carolina net. Kruger got the ball rolling by picking off a Eric Staal pass and gaining entry into the offensive zone. Read more »

Toews powers Hawks past Hurricanes; New guys debut; Teuvo Up To Stay; Ben Smith’s day, TVR update, IceHogs lose more guys

By Chris Block

After a weekend dealing with wild rumors of off-ice turmoil and supposed discord, the Blackhawks took to the ice on Monday with a couple of new faces and minus another. A United Center crowd announced as 21,641 watched the ‘Hawks cruise to a 5-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes.

The win pushed the Hawks to five points up on Winnipeg in the Central Division and eight on the Minnesota Wild. If the playoffs were to begin today, the Hawks would finish 3rd in the Central and face the Blues in the first round. Winnipeg would play Nashville and Minnesota would cross over into the Pacific Division bracket by way of finishing second in the Wild Card standings. Chicago is still four points back of St. Louis and the Blues have a game in hand on them.

Jonathan Toews notched his 20th and 21st goals of the season as the Hawks easily dissected the Hurricanes defense. Brandon Saad kept pace with the Captain, scoring his 20th midway through the second after a solid Patrick Sharp forecheck that created a Carolina turnover. Marcus Kruger (6th) and Marian Hossa (18th) would round out Chicago’s scoring. Corey Crawford made 27 saves in earning his 25th win on the campaign.

Antoine Vermette and Kimmo Timonen made their Blackhawks’ debuts. Read more »

In recent vintage we’ve covered first half over and underachievers as well as TTMI’s Top 50 Keeper/Dynasty League Under 25 Rankings for those fledgling teams who are looking towards next season and have no alternative other than undergoing a rebuild.

Hopefully the amount on goalie info won’t be quite as daunting and time consuming as it was this week, so we hope to concentrate on those owners in redraft leagues who are in the middle of the pack in their respective league’s standings and need to start making their move now with some high risk/high reward trade targets. By that measure we’re talking about selling high on some first half over performers and targeting first half underperformers who may be primed for a second half market correction. Read more »

Fantasy Chatter: Analysis and Week 2 advice

The Week Ahead: Week 2, Oct 13-19.

4 Game slates: ANA, BOS, BUF, CGY, COL, SJ
3 Game slates: CLB, DAL, DET, EDM, FLA, LA, MON, NASH, NJ, NYI, NYR, OTT, STL, TB, TOR, WASH
2 Game slates: ARI, CAR, CHI, MIN, PHI, PITT, VAN, WIN

Hopefully you’re not one of those panicky owners who has been dropping solid middle round quality players that have an extended track record of production for bottom pairing quality players who happen to get off to a quick start. Make sure you’re checking player usage if you are one of those people.

For example, Olli Maatta is a hot pickup right now after his 3 assist performance against the Ducks in the opener, and he may end up being solid this season, but if you look at his usage, he’s only accrued 1 shift on the PP for all of 24 seconds. Read more »

Fantasy Chatter~Premiere: Part 2 – Hawk Factors and Goalie Wars

FANTASY ‘HAWK FACTOR

Not much in the way of undervalued Blackhawks this season unless Teuvo Koivu captures a top 6 role due to injury, or Jeremy Morin skates top 9 minutes all season long.   Nick Leddy would normally be a trendy target to peg for a break out season should he happen to come upon top 4 pairing minutes and a wealth of  PP opportunities, but it seems like Leddy may be bumped off of the second PP unit in favor of Richards and Seabrook if recent events come to fruition.   Perhaps an ill-advised trade is forthcoming which may in turn bump Leddy’s value back to where it should be.

The wildcard would have to be Brandon Saad.  See Breakout Candidates section above.   If there is one Hawk, health provided, who should easily out earn his draft position, it’s Saad.

Patrick Kane is typically overvalued in fantasy drafts by a round or two each year, but he’s a reliable star who sparingly misses games.   There is value in certainty.   Read more »

Hawks take the ‘Canes 3-2 at the UC

By Brad Vandenberk

The St. Louis Who’s?  The Hawks finally tackled their demons and beat the Blues on Wednesday proving that they can beat anyone when they turn it up a notch.  Not only did they turn it up, they made it very uncomfortable for a very good Blues teams in all situations.  Corey Crawford made some very good saves to obtain his 10th career shutout.

Among all the celebrating, there was a significant loss suffered by the Hawks.  Patrick Kane was accidentally landed on while in an awkward position and seemed to twist his knee, leaving during the second period.

It was announced Friday that Kane was shut down for the remainder of the regular season and placed on long term injury reserve.   There is method to the Hawks madness.  This was one of the only options the Hawks had get Teuvo Teravainen up to the big squad.  He sported the Indian head this morning during the morning skate with teammates welcoming him as well as fans as the skate was streamed live.

Tonight’s game sees the Carolina Hurricanes enter the UC with a few key Hawks out of the line up.  Read more »
