Hawks Let Blues Off Mat But Prevail 4-3 In Shootout

Despite watching a two goal lead evaporate in the last ten minutes of the contest, the Chicago Blackhawks were able to come away with a huge 4-3 shootout win over the St. Louis Blues Thursday night at United Center.

With the victory, the Blackhawks have taken four of six games from the top team in the Western Conference. They also move another step closer to locking up a spot in the postseason with a solid performance.

The pace favored the Hawks early, but Chicago didn’t get on the board until midway through the opening frame. Kent Huskins committed a high stick on Andrew Shaw a little over two minutes in. Although the Blackhawks got a shot on goal on the power play for the first time in nine attempts, a single shot was all Chicago could muster.

The first score came when Nick Leddy found Bryan Bickell in the neutral zone in the eleventh minute. Bickell entered the Blues zone with Dave Bolland, where he skated to just above the left faceoff circle before sending a wrist shot past Jaroslav Halak at the 10:38 mark. Read more »

Hawks Score Early and Often, Sweep Season Series with Columbus

The Chicago Blackhawks visited the doormat that is the Columbus Blue Jackets Tuesday night. The Blackhawks had not dropped a contest to the visiting Blue Jackets all season, and a strong effort in the opening minutes paved the way for an easy 5-1 victory.

Chicago took control of the contest in the fifth minute when Bryan Bickell went to the corner for a loose puck, won the ensuing battle, and threw the puck off of the appropriately positioned Andrew Shaw and into the Columbus net. Shaw got the credit for the goal and the ‘Hawks led 1-0 just 4:12 into the game.

Patrick Sharp doubled that lead two minutes later after Viktor Stalberg found him in the corner just short of the goal line. Sharp let fly with a shot that caromed off of goalie Steve Mason and in to make it 2-0 with just 6:17 gone in the opening period. Read more »

Hawks keep rolling, beat Capitals 5-2 at the UC to earn 40th victory of the season

The Blackhawks controlled play for much of the game when they hosted the Washington Capitals at the United Center in the only meeting of the season between the two teams. Andrew Shaw opened the scoring and finished with two goals to lead the way in a complete team effort by the ‘Hawks in which they held Washington to just 18 shots en route to a 5-2 win.

The ‘Hawks scored first for the third straight game on a deflection by Shaw in front of the net. Bryan Bickell carried the puck over the line and hit Shaw with a rink-wide pass. He made a drag move around Brooks Laich to get to the center of the ice, but his shot was kicked out by the pad of Michal Neuvirth. Duncan Keith picked up the rebound and fired it back towards the traffic in front where it deflected off Shaw for a 1-0 Chicago lead.

The speed of Viktor Stalberg helped to extend the lead a few minutes later when he beat Washington defenseman Dmitry Orlov to a loose puck and converted on the breakaway against Neuvirth. Sharp dumped the puck down the ice and Stalberg left Orlov in his dust on his way to recovering the puck and tucking the shot behind a downed Neuvirth. Read more »

Former Sens lead Hawks to victory in Ottawa

The Chicago Blackhawks got some big games from a pair of former Ottawa Senators Friday night to get a three game road trip off to a promising start. Marian Hossa and Ray Emery figured heavily in the outcome as the Blackhawks bested a hot Senators squad by a 2-1 score.

The Hawks came up short on a golden opportunity four minutes in when Hossa took control of the puck in the Senators zone. He brought the puck behind the net and found Patrick Kane at the face off circle. Kane made a nice pass to Andrew Brunette. Despite there being plenty of open net, Brunette couldn’t get a handle on the pass, which looked like it was deflected.

Kane garnered a breakaway in the ninth minute but an active stick by Matt Gilroy prevented a shot. A Jared Cowen interference penalty at the 10:06 mark gave the Blackhawks a few shots on the power play, but as has been the case of late nothing came of it. Read more »

Back in 1972, my late friend Jack Carlson and I went to a concert at the International Amphitheatre in South Chicago. It was right after Deep Purple had released a great album called “Machine Head.” Deep Purple, at the time, had the reputation of being the loudest rock band in the business. Paradoxically, John Sebastian opened up for British rockers. Let’s just say the type of crowds the two bands might draw were divergent. This memory seems to come to the forefront of my thoughts every time we play the Mustard Men from Nashville. Read more »

9 in a row: Hawks come up short in Nashville

The Chicago Blackhawks turned in an improved effort as they continued their road trip in Nashville Tuesday night. However, the result was the same as their previous eight games.

The Blackhawks fought back to tie the score twice in the Music City, but another late goal lifted the Predators past their Central Division rivals. Chicago came up on the short end of a 3-2 final score to lose their ninth consecutive game.

The opening period saw both teams committing infractions, starting with Dave Bolland’s hooking penalty in the third minute. Mike Fisher was called for tripping 90 seconds later. In the fifth minute, Jonathan Toews ran into Nashville goalie Pekka Rinne, ending Chicago’s shot at the man advantage.

Fisher missed a wide open net late in the resulting power play, but for the most part the Blackhawks were successful in filling the shooting lanes.  Nashville killed a Martin Erat holding penalty at the 9:03 mark. This was followed by the two teams taking turns at Rinne and Ray Emery. Read more »

“If you’re happy and you know it, and you really want to show it, if you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands.”  Actually, you’re thinking you’d rather punch someone in the face about right now, aren’t you? The 7 game losing streak has seemed to take the life out of Blackhawk fandom, as most prepare for the worst. While not on par with the collapse of the ‘69 Cubs or the ’11 Red Sox, a lot of fans are abandoning ship. Personally, I’ve exhausted all the possibilities when attempting to answer my friend’s question, “What’s wrong with your Blackhawks?” As the Lemonhead song goes, “Patience is like bread I say, I ran out of it yesterday.” Read more »

Kruger scores twice; Hawks slide slips to 7 in San Jose

After a lengthy film session in Denver University on Wednesday morning and a “back to basics” practice on Thursday in California, the Chicago Blackhawks were back on the ice Friday night in San Jose trying to snap a six game losing streak.

The film session took place in a theatre that had the perfect set up to run through game tape of their 5-2 loss to the Avalanche on Tuesday night.  The session took longer than normal, but at this stage the Hawks were attempting anything to break this streak.    After travelling to San Jose and took to the ice to practice “hockey 101”.  If the current six game losing streak wasn’t enough, the flu bug was also flying around the locker room as four Hawk players took the day off practice.  Steve Montador was also missing from practice, but it was not due to the flu.  Monty suffered an upper body injury during the game on Tuesday and was placed on Injured Reserve Friday morning.  Dylan Olsen was recalled from the IceHogs to replace the injured Montador.   To rub more salt in the wound, Niklas Hjalmarsson, who originally had the flu, was then diagnosed with an upper body injury.  Both Nik and Monty flew back to Chicago and will not be playing Saturday night in Phoenix either.  Read more »

Kids, Supporting Cast Star in 5-2 Win Over Wild

The Blackhawks captured their second consecutive win Thursday night at the United Center against the visiting Minnesota Wild. A three-goal second period built a big enough lead for the ‘Hawks to hold in the third as the team earned a 5-2 win over the reeling Wild.

Minnesota winger Devin Setoguchi, who was scratched for the team’s previous game Tuesday against San Jose, notched the first goal of the contest just after the game’s first TV timeout. Blackhawks goaltender Ray Emery kicked a rebound out to the top of his crease, leaving an easy play for Setoguchi on the fly-by to get the Wild on the board first.

Chicago’s Andrew Shaw knotted the game at 1-1 later in the first period for his second goal in five games. Bryan Bickell drove the slot and occupied the defenseman, leaving Shaw room to skate in closer up the left side of the zone and beat Minnesota’s Josh Harding to the far side. Read more »
