As promised a few days ago, its the return of TTMI~Radio!

Al Cimaglia of Sirius/XM Radio and MyFoxChicago.com joined me to preview tonight’s Boxing Day Blackhawks-Blue Jackets matchup and to give his take on the Blackhawks, now 35 games into the 2011-12 season.

Its a solid hour of Blackhawks’ talk as we break down what is statistically the best team in the entire National Hockey League at the moment.

Crawford returns victorious, ‘Hawks stun Habs 5-1

After losing to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday night at Consol Energy Center, the Chicago Blackhawks played host to the Habitant Du Montreal at the United Center.  With the biggest crowd of the year on hand to witness the original six matchup, and Hawks did not disappoint their faithful.

Corey Crawford saw his first action after six games on the bench during Ray Emery’s  5-game winning streak.  After suffering their first loss in regulation in December at the hands of the Penguins, it was time for Crawford to get a chance, here on the second game of a back to back.  The Canadiens went with Peter Budaj in net as they were holding off Carey Price for a matchup Thursday in Winnipeg.

Marcus Kruger did not play after taking a head shot from Penguins defensemen Deryk Engelland on Tuesday.  Dan Carcillo was placed on Injury Reserve and also was inactive.  John Scott and Sami Lepisto were the additional scratches.  Sean O’Donnell was placed in the defensive lineup and Brandon Pirri was called up from the AHL earlier in the day.  Read more »

Emery, Blackhawks win 5th straight; Quenneville’s 600th

There was no love lost in the third meeting of the season between Calgary and Chicago but it was the Blackhawks that put together another solid effort and came away with two points. The Western Conference foes combined for 61 PIMs and the Flames out-hit the ‘Hawks by a count of 31 to 12, but Chicago was able to get out to a lead and hold on against a late Calgary charge for the 4-2 victory.

Steve Montador gave the Blackhawks a first period lead when his slap shot beat Miikka Kiprusoff to the glove side 9:23 into the game. The ‘Hawks fourth line of Viktor Stalberg, Jamal Mayers, and Andrew Brunette applied the pressure in the offensive zone and had the Flames chasing the play along the wall. Mayers’ centering pass found Montador wide open in the slot, where he unleashed a heavy shot that found the net just inside the post.

Later in the opening frame, Brent Seabrook was on the receiving end of another bad hit from a former teammate when Rene Bourque checked him squarely in the back. Read more »

Hawks surrounded by Coyotes, dropped 4-1 by Phoenix in United Center return

With the scent of circus still in the air at the United Center, the Chicago Blackhawks returned home to play their final game in November.  The Phoenix Coyotes were in town seeking revenge for the 5-2 loss they suffered at the hands of the Hawks back in Glendale in October.

The Coyotes got their revenge as they out played the Hawks from the opening faceoff.

Mike Smith withstood a barrage of Hawks shots in the opening moments.  It was the Coyotes that open the scoring.  With 4:07 remaining in the opening period, Daymond Langkow completed a tic tack toe play from Ray Whitney and Shane Doan.  The period ended with Hawks down 1-0 and out shot 8-7.

The second period saw the Coyotes extend their lead as Mikkel Boedker dropped a pass to Shane Doan who let a rocket go from the top of the right circle.  It repelled past Corey Crawford, hit the crossbar and fell beyond the goal line making it 2-0 with 10:06 remaining in the period. Read more »

Lindbloom: Big Dogs on the front porch

I think it’s the eyes, but that picture of Sean O’Donnell bears a striking resemblance to our goofy Newfie, George. George is in the doghouse at the moment for helping himself to a good portion of my son’s 11 pound bag of Halloween candy. Needless to say, he wasn’t feeling all that hot this morning. When I came home at lunch, well, let’s just leave it at – I had to wash the kitchen floor-twice. To make matters worse, he’s been on a strict diet since we adopted him in August. George apparently had enough of The Biggest Loser program we had him on. I’m thinking about putting a padlock on the fridge and stressing to him that potpourri is not edible.

We obtained George this past summer from a family in Steven’s Point, Wisconsin. The owner was heartbroken to have to give him up, and was determined to find a good family for the behemoth. It turned out that the owner was not only a Blackhawk fan, but had actually coached Joe Pavelski of the Sharks in a youth league. Needless to say, our visit to see if our family would be a good fit with George, turned into about a 3 hour stay. We’ve had three Akita’s so I thought we were quite familiar with big dogs. We quickly discovered George is in a weight class all his own. George, by far, is the strongest beast I’ve ever walked. He also has the loudest bark I’ve ever heard and doesn’t he love to hear himself.  When I saw that picture of O’Donnell the other day, it made stop and reflect for a moment on the acquisitions the Hawks made during the offseason, players who added some brute strength to watch over our skill players. If I were Corey Corey Crawford, I’d probably keep some dog biscuits handy. It’s nice to have some big dogs hanging around the porch! Read more »

Hawks Close Circus Trip with 2-1 Victory in LA

The Chicago Blackhawks brought their six-game road trip to a close Saturday night with their second victory in a row. The Blackhawks swept the back-to-back, following up Friday’s come from behind victory in Anaheim with a 2-1 triumph over the Los Angeles Kings.

The Hawks opened the scoring in the fourth minute when Duncan Keith fired a shot on goal from the left point. Marcus Kruger got a piece of the puck, and the deflection struck the side of the net and rolled toward the end boards. As Dave Bolland swung from the crossbar, Andrew Brunette calmly collected the puck and executed a nice wraparound on goalie Jonathan Quick.

Brunette, who played on the third line with Bolland and Kruger, potted his first even strength goal of the season. He proved to be efficient with the puck, drawing twine on his only attempt of the evening.

Chicago limited the Kings chances to score in the opening period, but Los Angeles evened the score midway through the contest. Keith stopped Matt Greene’s shot attempt only to see Jarret Stoll get control of the puck. Stoll took advantage of the turnover, firing a shot over Corey Crawford’s glove to tie the contest at a goal apiece. Read more »

Hawks get the Hustle Blues; St Louis 3, Chicago 0

The Chicago Blackhawks sported a shuffled lineup Tuesday night in St. Louis. Unfortunately, the result was the same uninspired play that marked Sunday’s loss to Vancouver.

On this night, T.J. Oshie led the way as the Blues prevailed 3-0. In addition to winning new coach Ken Hitchcock’s debut, St. Louis handed the ‘Hawks their second straight loss.

Neither team came out with a lot of fire, likely in part to an emotional ceremony for former Blues Pavol Demitra and Igor Kovolev (also formerly with Chicago) that delayed the start of the contest by several minutes. The two teams skated seven uneventful minutes before it felt like more than an extended pre-game skate.

The Blues opened the scoring at the 8:15 mark of the period. Kevin Shattenkirk brought the puck into the ‘Hawks zone and easily skated away from John Scott’s attempt to halt the play. Shattenkirk found Vladimir Sobotka headed for the net, and Sobotka was able to use some second effort to muscle the puck past Corey Crawford. Read more »

Blackhawks beat Blue Jackets 5-2, despite 3 disallowed goals

On Saturday, Chicago Blackhawks played their first divisional game of the year against the Columbus Blue Jackets.  Before the game, Dan Carcillo was given a 2 game suspension for his “hit” on Joni Pitkanen during Friday night’s shutout loss in Carolina.

Both teams started their back up goalies Saturday, giving Allen York his first NHL start of the season for Columbus.  Ray Emery started his second game of the year giving Corey Crawford the night off.  With Carcillo off the roster, the Hawks were forced to adjust their lineup accordingly.  Patrick Sharp took Carcillo’s spot on Patrick Kane and Marian Hossa’s line which put a void on the Jonathan Toews and Andrew Brunette line.  Viktor Stalberg found a spot on the first line moving up from the fourth.  The Bolland line stayed intact as the fourth line saw John Scott with Marcus Kruger and Jamal Mayers.  Sami Lepisto played his first game of the year on defense replacing Sean O‘Donnell.

The Hawks took the lead early. Marcus Kruger scored his first goal of the year, and first NHL goal, on a rebound.  Jamal Mayers entered the zone, let a shot go and Kruger put the puck passed York. Read more »

Crawford wins goalie battle; Hawks best Avs 3-1

The Chicago Blackhawks shut down one of the league’s hottest teams Thursday night in Denver with a 3-1 victory over the Colorado Avalanche. In a contest rife with big scoring chances, Corey Crawford won a duel in net with Colorado’s Semyon Varlamov to stop the Avs win streak at five games.

Crawford, who stopped 31 of 32 Colorado shots, had to be on his toes in the opening minutes as the Avs assaulted the ‘Hawks net minder early and often. Gabriel Landeskog caught Nick Leddy going the wrong way and fired one on net in the first minute. A penalty for too many men on the ice put Colorado’s power play unit into action just over two minutes into the contest.

Jonathan Toews took a shorthanded attempt strong to the net but was turned away. Chicago killed the penalty and soon generated some chances of its own. Marian Hossa was just a bit late on a rebound off of a Brent Seabrook shot. Ryan O’Reilly beat Crawford’s glove but drew only iron. Read more »

Lindbloom: Get Your Shine On

One of life’s simple little pleasures is a great shoe shine. That along with a freshly detailed car, (c’mon, admit it, some of you have McDonald wrappers in your back seat), a good night’s repose or a smile from your wife tend to inordinately lift one’s spirits. The above picture was taken last Saturday before the Bruins game. I’ve had my shoes shined by Haywood for numerous years now. Trust me when I tell you he can bring the dead back to life! If you’re like me, getting the shoes shined gets put on the back burner in my busy life. In fact, if you ever notice that my shoes don’t match my outfit, it’s because I finally decided, after 4 months, to get them shined no matter what the fashion disaster. (Haywood recommends 6 weeks by the way.) Think about it for a second – do you think Hossa would let those bad boy white loafers go that long? Forget about it!

In a related story, I took two customers to a Hawks game a few years back with my boss. With about 5 minutes remaining in the 1st period, I came to the calculated conclusion I could not wait until the end of the period to relieve myself. As I came out of the bathroom I noticed Haywood in his chair. H’mmm, I thought, maybe I’ll get a quick shoe shine. Unfortunately, I forgot how thorough Haywood is, and found myself sitting in his chair a little longer than anticipated. It was then that my boss emerged from Sec 101. Read more »
