Kane, Bickell lift Hawks to 3-2 win in Denver

By Chris Block

The Blackhawks ran over a depleted Colorado Avalanche roster in Denver on Wednesday night, outshooting the home team and dominating the action from the opening to final minute. But Chicago needed a great individual effort from Patrick Kane, and a brutal play by Alex Tanguay, leading to a Bryan Bickell tally with 5:17 remaining in the third period to take a 3-2 win out of Colorado.

Avalanche starter Calvin Pickard made 42 saves in the losing effort. The Blackhawks fired 76 shots in all at Pickard, according to the official scorers, as opposed to Colorado’s 48. Corey Crawford made 27 saves in his 12th consecutive start for his 10th win of the season.

Jonathan Toews and Andrew Shaw netted power play goals for a Hawks power play that was 2 for 6 on the evening. The Avalanche went 0-2 in the game and the head coach and Colorado players were stewing after the game about the discrepancy in power plays.

Rockford caps Four-Point Weekend with Shootout Victory over Lake Erie, BMO Zamboni is day-to-day

It took regulation, overtime and seven rounds of a shootout, but the Rockford IceHogs completed two weekend victories with a 2-1 shootout win over the visiting Lake Erie Monsters. It really was a battle of opposing net-minders, with Hutton making 35 saves on 36 Lake Erie attempts. Hutton was named the game’s first star.

Pickard stopped 40 of the 41 shots he faced, the lone goal coming via a Kyle Beach power play goal in the final minute of the first period. The tally, which was assisted by Brandon Pirri and Jeremy Morin, tied the score at a goal apiece following Paul Carey’s goal midway through the first. Read more »
