More news on Blackhawks scouting, Hockey Analytics and off season front office changes and info: Major Name Gone

By Chris Block

We have further information on Chicago Blackhawks front office and hockey operations shakeups from the off season before we advance into the heart of the matter now that training camps are active.

Michel Dumas, the last remaining relic generally associated with the Bill Wirtz / Bob Pulford era of Blackhawks hockey, has moved on.

Dumas, 65, briefly served as Tony Esposito’s backup on the Hawks during the mid-70’s. Dumas suffered a career-ending right eye injury during a game against Colorado at Chicago Stadium on December 26, 1976. With his playing career over, he was given a job by Bill Wirtz as an amateur scout the very next season.

Dumas tenure on the Blackhawks scouting staff spanned the next 37 years. This lead to a running joke in circles for many years that the Blackhawks top scout was ‘legally blind.’

In 1992, Dumas would be promoted to Chief Amateur Scout. He held that position until Bruce Franklin, who has been on the Hawks scouting staff now for over 20 years, took over from Dumas in 2010. Read more »

Hawks re-sign three, part ways with Salak; plus notes on Hawks draft and goaltending, Ed Belfour and Jimmy Waite

By Chris Block

Blackhawks announced they’ve re-signed three restricted free agents today.

Ben Smith, Brandon Bollig and goaltender Carter Hutton all inked new deals.

According to reports, Smith and Bollig each signed two-year contracts.

Bollig’s first year is a two-way deal.  He’ll be paid at a rate of $575,000 in the NHL and $105,000 if he plays in the AHL.  His second year is a one-way contract paying him $575,000.

Ben Smith is also on a two-way contract for 2012-13.  Smith will reportedly earn $550,000 when he’s playing at the NHL level and $105,000 in the minors.  In 2013-14, Smith has a guaranteed contract for $575,000.

Carter Hutton agreed to a one-year, two-way contract.

–On Friday, the Blackhawks placed goaltender Alexander Salak on waivers.  The rest of the league has apparently passed on Salak.  Today it was announced the Blackhawks and Salak agreed to an outright release. Read more »

Wednesday news/notes: Carcillo, Roenick, Chico Maki, Waite, AHL sked and more

Adam Jahns of the Sun-Times has a quick Q&A with Dan Carcillo here.

Jahns asked Carcillo to describe himself away from the ice.  Carcillo said what pretty much every one of his former teammates will say, and its that he’s “pretty much the exact opposite.”  (Opposite, that is, of a loose cannon. My words)

Carcillo: “If something irks me or gets me upset, I usually take it out on the ice.”

That explains a lot.

–Former Blackhawk goaltender Jimmy Waite is the new goaltending coach for the Chicoutimi Sagueneens (QMJHL).  Waite is the younger brother of current Blackhawks’ goaltending coach Stephane Waite.  Jimmy, who is now 42, continued his playing career in Europe until retiring at age 40.  He returns to coach the team he played junior hockey with, the same Chicoutimi organization Waite was playing for when the Hawks drafted him 8th overall in 1987 NHL Draft.  The president of the current day Sagueneens is Guy Carbonneau.

–Apparently there is a site in Europe pushing a rumor saying David Aebischer will be traded to Fribourg-Gotteron soon and Cristobal Huet is out attributing me as the source.  That’s not even close to what I wrote.

–The Maple Leafs revealed their roster for the round-robin rookie camp tournament taking place September 10 – 13 in Oshawa.  The Blackhawks, Senators and Penguins are the other teams involved.

–For those who missed our note the other day, yesterday, August 16, marked the 15-year anniversary of the trade that sent Jeremy Roenick to Phoenix for Alexei Zhamnov. Read more »
