Partee!

When I was working as a foreman back in the 70’s a worker named Gus came up to me and said, “Rich, the Stones gone disco.”  I had no idea what he was talking about and had him repeat what he was saying about three times. Finally I said “Gus, there is no way on God’s green earth the Stones would play a disco song. None, zippo.” Sure enough, a few days later the song “Miss You,” had flooded the air waves. Not exactly “Gimme Shelter, but actually the song was pretty catchy. It had a groove that had the potential to make a crackah think he could dance.

Out of all the genre’s of music that have emerged over the decades, Disco had to be my least favorite. It was a time of leisure suits, chest hair, ostentatious medallions, big hair, The Bee Gee’s and John Travolta. I recall talking about disco one day with my boss who would spin records on the side. This guy would scour garage sales for old Jazz albums and I really respected his musical taste. When I began mocking the Village People, in particular the song YMCA, he said something that I’ll never forget. Read more »

Hawks stars snap 9-game skid in Manhattan

It had been nearly a month since Corey Crawford and the Blackhawks were able to put one in the win column, but they did just that against one of the league’s top teams with 4-2 victory over the Rangers at Madison Square Garden. A scorched-earth policy from the big guns of the Blackhawks propelled the team to its first win since January 20th and first road victory since December 14th.

All four goals for Chicago came during the first 10 minutes of the game. The visitors were out to a 3-0 lead just four minutes into the game and then able to extend it about five minutes later. The penalty kill and a solid defensive effort at the other end of the ice was enough to stave off the relentless Rangers. Read more »

Sedins sneak by Hawks in Overtime, 3-2

The Chicago Blackhawks definitely showed up at Rogers Arena Tuesday night. Unfortunately, the return of Patrick Sharp and Jonathan Toews to the line up was spoiled with 37 saves by Cory Schneider and an overtime tally by the Sedin twins.

Chicago picked up a point in the first game on the road over the next three weeks, but Vancouver prevailed by a score of 3-2.

The momentum ebbed and flowed throughout the opening period. Vancouver got an early opportunity when David Booth beat Niklas Hjalmarsson for control of a puck. Booth found himself fight in front of Corey Crawford 90 seconds into the game, but his shot was knocked away.

Andrew Shaw drew a clipping penalty from Keith Ballard that the Canucks killed in the fourth minute. Patrick Sharp found Marian Hossa streaking up the ice and it appeared as if he would get a breakaway attempt on Cory Schneider. Alex Burrows make a nice play to thwart Hossa, then helped set up the game’s first goal at the 7:58 mark. Read more »

4-0, Avs take it to tired Blackhawks

The Chicago Blackhawks returned home Friday night to play the Colorado Avalanche.  Chicago played the night before in Philadelphia where they erased a two goal lead only to loose with 30 seconds left in the third period.  This game was one the Hawks needed to win in order to maintain the 1st place status in the Western Conference and Central Division.

Andrew Shaw and Dylan Olsen remained with the big club as their games spoke volume against the Flyers less than 24 hours earlier.  Dan Carcillo served his 2nd game of his seven game suspension.   Marcus Kruger and Steve Montador also remained out of the Hawks’ lineup with injuries.

With new faces in the lineup, Coach Q, again, made some adjustments to his four lines.  Shaw saw time at center between Patrick Kane and Patrick Sharp.  Michael Frolik had a chance to show what he could do as he was put up with Jonathan Toews and Marian Hossa.  The line of Dave Bolland, Bryan Bickell and Viktor Stalberg were reunited after showing some good chemistry just a few games ago.  Finally Jamal Mayers, Andrew Brunette and Jimmy Hates rounded out the Hawks top 4 lines.

Corey Crawford got the nod for the Hawks and was busy early.  The pace to the game had a great start as both teams had some chances to score.   Half way through the first period the Hawks started to show their tired legs from playing the night before. Read more »

Lindbloom: Blackhawks – Slap That Tail

Mark 8:28 “But what about you,” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

While realizing this is a sensitive subject, I can’t help reflecting on that babe born in a manger some 2000 years ago. “What child is this?” that inspired so much incredible art and beautiful music that we are blessed with at this time of year. (Although, if I hear Feliz Navidad one more time my head will explode.) As with Moses, Jesus was born in very humble surroundings.  Both men shunned earthly kingdoms. Both men were on a mission to lead lost sheep to the Promised Land.  I’ve always found it somewhat amazing that the first people on this earth to see Jesus, were the lowliest of the low. A group of shepherds tending their flocks on a deep and dark night near Bethlehem, go to the stable after being terrified by an angel that told them not to be afraid. “I bring you news of great joy for all men.” Read more »

Kruger KO’d, A Stalberg Period, A 3-2 Penguins Win – And the Blackhawks streak ends at 5

The Chicago Blackhawks spotted Pittsburgh a three goal advantage over the first 40 minutes Tuesday night in the Consol Energy Center. A furious third period charge made for a fun finish, but the Penguins held on to hand the Blackhawks their first regulation loss of the month by the score of 3-2.

It was a rough and tumble contest that turned in a playoff-type atmosphere. Pittsburgh used a physical play to pave the way for the game’s first goal in the ninth minute of action.

Deryk Engelland attempted to remove Marcus Kruger’s head, which somehow went unpenalized save for John Scott jumping in and throwing down. As a result, Scott was assessed the instigator penalty.  On the resulting power play, just over a minute later, the Penguins scored on a wrist shot by Chris Kunitz, assisted by Evgeni Malkin and Matt Niskanen.

Kruger appeared to be okay and finished the first period, but did not return for the second and third.  Pittsburgh went into the locker room with a 1-0 lead. Read more »

Emery, Blackhawks win 5th straight; Quenneville’s 600th

There was no love lost in the third meeting of the season between Calgary and Chicago but it was the Blackhawks that put together another solid effort and came away with two points. The Western Conference foes combined for 61 PIMs and the Flames out-hit the ‘Hawks by a count of 31 to 12, but Chicago was able to get out to a lead and hold on against a late Calgary charge for the 4-2 victory.

Steve Montador gave the Blackhawks a first period lead when his slap shot beat Miikka Kiprusoff to the glove side 9:23 into the game. The ‘Hawks fourth line of Viktor Stalberg, Jamal Mayers, and Andrew Brunette applied the pressure in the offensive zone and had the Flames chasing the play along the wall. Mayers’ centering pass found Montador wide open in the slot, where he unleashed a heavy shot that found the net just inside the post.

Later in the opening frame, Brent Seabrook was on the receiving end of another bad hit from a former teammate when Rene Bourque checked him squarely in the back. Read more »

Trophies, they’re never easy to come by, are they? While the trophies being held up in the photo above may not rival a toothless Duncan Keith hoisting the Cup two years ago, it’s rather apparent the four knuckleheads are quite proud of their efforts on a rain soaked day of fishing in Canada. Apparently, one of the boys on the fishing trip decided to stay in the cabin and raid the liquor cabinet – that could explain the off center photo. The lad on the left was my baby brother Jim, who passed away around this time last year. A friend who was known as the tenth Lindbloom, Rabbi Voshnewsky, sent the picture and one of my all time favorite stories as a very pleasant reminder of the last of nine Lindblooms to enter this world…. Complete effort drives Hawks over Ducks 4-1

Ray Emery earned another start in net with the Anaheim Ducks in town and helped the Blackhawks beat his former team by a score of 4-1. Emery’s shutout bid was spoiled by Teemu Selanne with less than two minutes to play in the game, but the veteran goalie turned in another strong start for Chicago in collecting his fourth consecutive win in as many starts.

Emery’s cause was aided by the effort of the skaters in front of him. For all the ink the ‘Hawks top players have earned so far this season, it was Jamal Mayers and the fourth line that opened the scoring for Chicago at the 6:37 mark of the first.

Andrew Brunette won the puck on the forecheck against Francois Beauchemin and passed it to an open Mayers behind the net. Jonas Hiller was slow to cover his post and Mayers was able to flip the puck off the goalie and into the net.

Chicago extended the lead quickly at the start of the second after pressure from Marian Hossa and Patrick Sharp gave the ‘Hawks possession in the Duck zone. Sharp picked up a loose puck and fed Hossa driving in all alone on Hiller. Hossa powered the backhander through the legs of Hiller just over a minute into the second period to put the Blackhawks up by a pair of goals. Read more »
