Streak 23-Blackhawks win 10th straight, top Wild 5-3

The Chicago Blackhawks got a pair of goals from Bryan Bickell and a three-point night from Brandon Saad as the home team won a franchise-record tenth straight contest Tuesday night, a 5-3 decision over the Minnesota Wild.

On a night honoring Marian Hossa, the ‘Hawks used four unanswered goals in a six-minute span in the first period to avenge one of their three losses on the 2013 season. Chicago wins their 20th game and have now earned 43 of a possible 46 points.

In his first shift back from an upper body injury, Dave Bolland earned a high sticking penalty when his blade caught Torrey Mitchell in the face. Jonathan Toews had a breakaway chance even after losing his stick. Thanks to some NASCAR-like efficiency from the bench, Toews took a pass from Hossa but was turned away by Backstrom. No, that is not a picture of Sam Fels’s family room wall. Actually, it’s my daughter Taylor’s bedroom wall– nothing like a little Blackhawk paraphernalia to brighten up a room! I had to laugh one day when Nathalie looked at the wall and asked, “What have you done to her?” The wall of fame contains rally towels, ticket stubs, Jonathan Toews pictures, more Jonathan Toews pictures and an assortment of other Hawk items. These items eventually replaced a huge foldout of Mark Bell, the 8th pick in the 1998 draft. I remember her asking me, as we drove home from the game that they gave the Bell poster away, if he was any good. I told her yes and the next day it was up on the wall in the room. Kane saves ‘Hawks point streak, then takes the second point from Detroit in the shootout

On a cold afternoon in Detroit, the Blackhawks invaded Joe Louis Arena for a 12:30 ET start.  This lone NHL afternoon match was viewed nationally and did not disappoint.

The Hawks came in riding their 21 game point streak and the Red Wings were looking to play spoiler and break that streak.

With the talk of re-alignment throughout the NHL, the Red Wings will move over to the Eastern Conference and only see the Hawks 2 times a year versus the regular 6 times.  This could be a big blow to the already great rivalry between these 2 clubs.

Marian Hossa played in his 1000th game, etching his name among the elite in the NHL.  Dave Bolland missed his 5th consecutive game with an upper body injury.  Read more »

Hawks soar on, beating the Oilers 3-2 in Overtime

Now that the dust has settled after a weekend of NHL record setting, it was time for the Blackhawks to shift the focus toward the young guns from Edmonton.  This was the first meeting between these two teams this season.

If we take a second to remember last season, the Oilers dominated the Hawks with Sam Ganger recording an 8 point night during one of the contests in northern Alberta.  So, it would be sort of fitting if the Hawks were to have their record streak broken by the hands of these Oilers.   However, the Oilers were missing one of their top forwards in Taylor Hall.  He was serving his second game of a 2 game suspension for a vicious open ice hit on Wild’s forward Cal Clutterbuck.  This would slightly deplete an already star-studded Oilers’ line up.

On the other hand, the Hawks were missing second line center, Dave Bolland, who suffered an upper body injury during the Sharks game on Friday and missed Sunday night’s game against Columbus.  Read more »

Blackhawks Recover For Shootout Win Over Canucks, Hossa victim of Hansen’s Forearm

The Chicago Blackhawks let a two-goal lead evaporate in the final minutes, but got a surprising shootout goal from Andrew Shaw to defeat the Vancouver Canucks 4-3 in a shootout Tuesday night. Marian Hossa scored a pair of goals but missed most of the third period and may have suffered a dreaded upper body injury when he was hit in the back of the head by Jannick Hansen.

In the first period, the teams traded scoring chances in the first few minutes. The ‘Hawks top line held the puck in the Vancouver zone long enough for a couple of opportunities, the best coming when a Johnny Oduya slapper got redirected by Brandon Saad. The puck came out in front of the net but Jonathan Toews couldn’t get it by Cory Schneider. Read more »

Hawks keep rolling, top struggling Sharks 4-1

The San Jose Sharks came to Chicago losers of six straight games, and they met an unfavorable host in the unbeaten Blackhawks.

The home team never trailed, getting another solid goaltending performance from Ray Emery. The scoring was provided by depth players, in most cases known more for their defensive acumen than offensive game, with goals from Dave Bolland, Marcus Kruger, Andrew Shaw, and Niklas Hjalmarsson.

It was not scoring, however, but fisticuffs that got the Chicago crowd into the game early. Jonathan Toews was whistled for a boarding penalty on Joe Thornton in the corner, and shortly after, things boiled over between Toews and Thornton and the captains squared off for a first period fight. Anaheim Spoils Hawk Homecoming; Ducks prevail 3-2 in the Shootout contest

The Chicago Blackhawks returned to the United Center Tuesday to take on the team directly below them in the Western Conference standings, the Anaheim Ducks. The ‘Hawks led after two periods, but lost the lead late and suffered a 3-2 shootout loss to begin a seven-game home stand.

Viktor Fasth won his sixth straight start this season, stopping 28 of the 30 shots managed by the Blackhawks.

In the opening period, Chicago had a nice chance created by Brandon Saad, who won a battle for the puck, took it into the Ducks zone and passed to Jonathan Toews. Toews got behind the net and set up Saad in front of the net, but Fasth stopped the attempt. Read more »

PuckChatter~Radio: The Blackhawks are really good

PuckChatter~Radio returned from a 5-week hiatus Monday night simply to proclaim that the Chicago Blackhawks are, in fact, really, really good.  Yep, that’s about it.  But hey, we’re rusty.

Well, we did too discuss Duncan Keith and the level he’s been playing at thus far.  We also took a look at Brandon Saad’s game and what lineup change could benefit the team right now.

Also, we reviewed some of our 5 day Las Vegas visit over Super Bowl Weekend (if you’re hungry for more audio, I did two hours with Radio Exposed last week talking Vegas, the Super Bowl and many other things here) ; our experience at the ECHL Las Vegas Wranglers 18 & Over Topless Hockey night game; some Rockford IceHogs news and notes; Adam Clendening, Philippe Paradis and Dylan Olsen sound clips; Valentine’s Day advice for the guys and a tribute to a friend.  The show is also interrupted and my co-host Superstar has to drop off for the remainder when a woman drove into the tree in his front yard driving 40 miles an hour. True story.  Apparently the woman is okay all things considered.

Crawford claims 1st shutout in almost 2 years; Hawks win 3-0 in Nashville

One week since the Super Bowl claimed its victor, it was time for the Blackhawks to claim victory on the final night of their 6-game road trip on Sunday night in Nashville.  The team has been on a two week road trip covering western Canada, the sunny south and now the home of country music.

The Predators played on Saturday night in Minnesota and went all the way to overtime and then a shootout where they came up short losing 2-1.  The Hawks already had a practice in Nashville and were awaiting the Sunday night central division grudge match.  It was said the talk around the locker room was that the energy was high and the excitement of returning home to Chicago and a seven-game home stand was even more enticing.  The Hawks have only played at the United Center twice this season and rolled into Nashville on Sunday with a 9-0-2 record, the best in the NHL.  Read more »

Kane scores two, ‘Hawks blow through Phoenix 6-2

The Chicago Blackhawks earned their seventh road win of the 2013 season with a 6-2 victory in Glendale over the Phoenix Coyotes. Patrick Kane scored a pair of power play goals in the first period and Ray Emery had another reliable outing in net as the Blackhawks improved to 9-0-2 on the year.

The game marked the first time that Raffi Torres would be on the ice against the Blackhawks after his high hit on Marian Hossa in the 2012 playoffs knocked the Hawks star winger out of action for months.

Retribution was quick against Raffi Torres, who answered the bell on his first shift of the game. Jamal Mayers initiated the scrap as soon as he stepped off the bench, and Torres was ready for him. Read more »
