Kane scores two, ‘Hawks blow through Phoenix 6-2

By Brad Gardner

The Chicago Blackhawks earned their seventh road win of the 2013 season with a 6-2 victory in Glendale over the Phoenix Coyotes. Patrick Kane scored a pair of power play goals in the first period and Ray Emery had another reliable outing in net as the Blackhawks improved to 9-0-2 on the year.

The game marked the first time that Raffi Torres would be on the ice against the Blackhawks after his high hit on Marian Hossa in the 2012 playoffs knocked the Hawks star winger out of action for months.

Retribution was quick against Raffi Torres, who answered the bell on his first shift of the game. Jamal Mayers initiated the scrap as soon as he stepped off the bench, and Torres was ready for him. Read more »

Brandon Saad nets first NHL goal in Blackhawks 5-3 victory in San Jose

By Jon Fromi

The Chicago Blackhawks broke a four-game losing streak at the HP Pavilion, rallying from an early two-goal deficit to defeat the San Jose Sharks 5-3 Tuesday night. The ‘Hawks remained unbeaten in regulation this season in a game that saw rookie Brandon Saad log his first NHL goal in a wild first period.

The Sharks were physical right from the start of the contest and it paid off in the form of a pair of early goals. San Jose laid some hard hits on Andrew Shaw along the boards and Duncan Keith behind the ‘Hawks net. Keith avoided big contact, but landed hard on his back.

With Keith temporarily on the bench, Joe Pavelski knocked in a bouncing puck created by Marc Edouard Vlasic’s shot from the point at the 2:53 mark of the first.

Minutes later, Tommy Wingles got the puck entering the Chicago zone and fired a lazer over the glove of Corey Crawford to make it 2-0 San Jose just 5:18 into the game. At this point, coach Joel Quenneville used his time out in an attempt to settle his team. It did just that as Chicago struck twine three times in the span of 89 seconds. Read more »

Emery makes 45 saves, ices Flames 3-2 in shootout

By Brad Gardner

The Blackhawks got back into the win column on Saturday night in Calgary, pulling out a 3-2 victory in their third consecutive game decided by shootout.

Patrick Kane scored the deciding goal in the shootout, but Ray Emery was the story of the game. Making just his second start of the season, the veteran goaltender made 45 saves against perpetual pressure from the Calgary Flames.

Emery saw plenty of action in the opening frame, but apart from a couple rebounds let out in front of his net, he did not have any trouble getting locked into the game early.

He showed good positioning, making an early save on a Dennis Wideman shot that was deflected in front of the net. Emery also received a little help from the post in the latter half of the period. Following a quick give-and-go with Alex Tanguay, Mike Cammalleri saw some open net to the far side but drew iron with a one-timed shot. Read more »

Luongo gets better of Hawks, Canucks win 2-1 in the shootout

By Brad Vandenberk

The road trip continued for the Blackhawks as they headed into Vancouver to play the vengeful Canucks. The goose egg was slightly cracked Wednesday night in Minnesota where the Hawks came up short in a shootout losing 3-2, but still obtained a single point to put them a top the NHL leader board.

Excitement was in the air as the coin turned up heads and the Canucks started Hawks favourite Roberto Luongo.  The Hawks countered with their tales toss and started Cory Crawford.  The home squad made the Hawks well aware that they wanted some revenge on the elbow that Duncan Keith through on Daniel Sedin last season.  Keith said he just wanted to stick to hockey.   Read more »

Blackhawks edge ‘Jackets; 5-0 start best since 1971

By Brad Vandenberk

Domination and determination is what wins Stanley cups.  This, we witnessed in 2010 when the Blackhawks became champions.  Playing with confidence, and having their superstars turn in multi point nights, sometimes with questionable goaltending helps too.

This year is much of the same.  Even the players understand that this could be one heck of a year if they are determined to dominate the opposition.  The Blackhawks come from behind win in Dallas on Thursday shows that they are determined once again.

The Hawks were on the road again on Saturday night playing another Central division opponent, the Columbus Blue Jackets.  Read more »

Stars giveth and Blackhawks taketh-victory away

By Brad Gardner

The Blackhawks extended their winning streak to four games with a 3-2 comeback win in Dallas, capped off by Marian Hossa‘s league-leading fifth goal of the season less than two minutes into overtime. The Stars got out to a 2-0 lead in the second, thanks in large part to a stellar performance from goaltender Kari Lehtonen, but the Blackhawks offensive pressure proved to be too much to handle.

The Blackhawks outshot Dallas 12-6 in the first period, but they came up empty on two power play opportunities and, just as the period was coming to an end, gave up a shorthanded goal to Loui Eriksson. Read more »

‘Hawks hold on to defeat Blues in UC home opener

By Jon Fromi

The Chicago Blackhawks opened their home schedule in fine fashion Tuesday night, treating the United Center crowd to a 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues. Corey Crawford was able to out duel Brian Elliot to give the Blackhawks their third win of the season in as many games.

The Blackhawks dominated most of the first period, testing Elliot several times in the opening minutes. Patrick Kane, Bryan Bickell and Brandon Bollig all had open looks on odd man rushes but were turned away by the St. Louis goalie.

Elliot held fast until the 7:20 mark, when Chicago managed a three-man rush to the net with no opposition by the Blues. Nick Leddy started the play by gaining possession of the puck and finding Kane in the neutral zone. Kane brought the puck up the left side, played catch with Patrick Sharp and came across the crease. One backhand later, Kane had his second goal of the season and the ‘Hawks led 1-0. Read more »

Hossa, 2nd line again ignite Blackhawks offense; trip to desert yields 6-4 victory

By Brad Vandenberk

The Blackhawks continued their back-to-back opening weekend road trip on Sunday night in Phoenix.  A dually important matchup to Chicago, as these were the same Coyotes that put them out in the first round of the playoffs last season.

After a convincing 5-2 win in LA on Saturday, the Hawks were looking to keep the momentum and emotions high to start the season.  With only two home games in the next four weeks, it was important to get the wins on the road when they could.  Read more »

Blackhawks off to roaring start, blast through the defending champs 5-2 in LA

By Brad Gardner

Three months late, the Chicago Blackhawks finally kicked off the new season on the road against the defending Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings. The Blackhawks were sharp with the puck and got off to a quick start, eventually coming away a 5-2 victory.

Although badly out-hit in the game by the Kings (39-22), the Blackhawks managed to get off to the quick start and hold the lead. The PK unit turned in a perfect effort, killing off five penalties in the game (although the final Kings advantage lasted only the final 36 seconds of the game).

Less than two minutes into the game, Patrick Sharp drew the first penalty. Then 40 seconds into that man advantage, Trevor Lewis cross-checked Jonathan Toews into the corner boards to put the Blackhawks on a 5-on-3 power play. The first unit maintained the offensive zone throughout the two-man advantage, in part because of a hustle play by Marian Hossa to keep the puck in the zone, and Patrick Kane eventually cashed on a one-time blast from a sharp angle. Hossa, who lined up on the point for this power play, got the primary assist for putting the puck in Kane’s wheelhouse. Read more »

Lindbloom’s View: Song and Reflections on better days

“I want to bite the hand that feeds me,
I want to bite that hand so badly,
I want to make them wish they’d never seen me…” – Elvis Costello

By Rich Lindbloom

I heard a great definition of philosophy recently:  “A blind man, in a dark room, looking for a black cat, that doesn’t exist.”

Tell me that doesn’t describe the excruciating labor negotiations between the NHL owners and the players union in a nutshell. Quite frankly, I don’t think I’m alone in my burgeoning apathy in this greed laden, rapacious process. Waves of intense anger may belie my apathy, but I’m doing my best to cope with the situation. Trying to pretend I could care less is easier said than done. Read more »
