PuckChatter~Radio, e.122, Rockford IceHogs week in review, the NHL’s Monkey Business & review of the Jeremy Roenick book

By Chris Block

This week on PuckChatter~Radio we review the controversial as-told-to autobiography of NHL and Chicago Blackhawks legend, Jeremy Roenick.

We also detail the Rockford IceHogs three-game weekend, in which they started the weekend in first place in the Midwest Division but then fell behind the Grand Rapids Griffins after losing two-of-three including the 4-2 loss in Grand Rapids on Sunday that dropped the ‘Hogs down into second place.

Then we assess the latest in the NHL – NHLPA collective bargaining standoff and take a deeper look than you’ve probably read or heard elsewhere into a few of the key issues the two sides are at odds over.

All this and much more, including a special Christmas jingle, on this edition of PuckChatter~Radio.

I’ll be joining CT and the “Forklift” of Hockeenight.com fame this coming Sunday night, December 16th on their show, the Hockeenight PuckCast for a special Holiday Season podcast.  I can’t think of anything that could possibly be more fun.

PuckChatter~Radio will return next week as well at a date, time and with a guest to be determined later in the week.  (Read that, whenever I get around to figuring all that out.)

By Chris Block

PuckChatter~Radio returns Live on Monday December 3rd at 8pm central. Sam Fels of the TheCommittedIndian.com will join me to discuss all the hockey there is to talk about as well as the latest in the ongoing NHL CBA labor negotiation saga which may very well come to a head on Tuesday.

We’ll discuss the ongoing experiment that has seen Jimmy Hayes move off the wing to the center ice position. Also, we’ll review several IceHogs at the 1/4 mark of the AHL season including the up and down play of Nick Leddy, Andrew Shaw and Dylan Olsen.  Is Kyle Beach finally coming around? Does Jeremy Morin fit in on the Hawks if the CBA mess is resolved soon? How good are rookies Brandon Saad and Adam Clendening?

All this and more — You can listen live on Monday night or in the archives either here  on the web site, on Itunes or over at BlogTalkRadio.

PuckChatter~Radio, Got ‘Em from the Peanut Man

By Chris Block

PuckChatter~Radio returned Sunday night (in sixty-minute form) to review a bunch of topics, some of which actually pertained to Chicago Blackhawks hockey.

We also reviewed our recent camping excursion in the northern reaches of Wisconsin, Sunday’s trip to Wrigley Field for the Chicago Cubs game (and more) and also a recent altercation Block had outside of a Jewel-Osco.

On the hockey side we talked the potential changes and ramifications should the NHL owners and player’s association agree to modify the current structure of Entry-Level contracts, Rostislav Olesz‘s status for this season, a Kyle Beach article sets a new standard for incompetence, Cristobal Huet‘s new big contract and the Blackhawks new ticket pricing structure for the 2012-13 season.

All that and much, much more.

Special Prospect Camp podcast this Saturday

By Chris Block

Join us Live, this Saturday July 14th at 2:30pm central for the next edition of PuckChatter~Radio, the official podcast of TheThirdManIn.com

Here’s the link to Listen Live on Saturday at 2:30pm

Unfortunately I am unable to attend any of the on-ice sessions or scrimmages at Johnny’s IceHouse this week, but TTMI.com contributor Brad Gardner has been on hand all week and he’ll join me to discuss all the Blackhawks prospects and recap this summer’s camp.

Also…

I never do this and probably should make a bigger deal of it, but checking the BTR stats, last week’s show with Al Cimaglia was our second-most downloaded show in history.

Also, TTMI/PuckChatter~Radio is now the 2nd most popular hockey show on Blog Talk Radio.  And those numbers don’t include those of you who access our shows directly through this site, which represents roughly 40% of our total listenership.

Its pretty incredible, and humbling, to have such a loyal base audience that has stuck with us. We don’t advertise, pimp or spam our show. We just do it and lay it out there. And even when we disappear for awhile our listeners don’t seem to forget about us.

I just wanted to say Thanks to everyone who has ever listened.  Whether you are new; an intermittent listener or a loyal one – its very much appreciated.  Even when I get annoyed and yell at emailers or a random caller, it is humbling to have so many people listening and chiming in.   Its fun to do when we have the time and I hope to keep doing it for the foreseeable future.

News/notes: Mac Carruth turning pro, upcoming shows

By Chris Block

A few news items tonight but first a couple plugs…

–Our PuckChatter~Radio podcast returns this Tuesday night, May 29th at 8pm central.  We’ll focus on our listener emails on the Blackhawks, IceHogs and prospects.  You can listen live that night at this link.  If you have a question or commentary you would like to contribute, send those to PuckChatter@gmail.com by Tuesday afternoon at the latest.

If you haven’t listened to our interview with Stephen Nelson from this past Tuesday night, I’d urge you to do so.  If you’re interested in the Blackhawks top prospects in Rockford especially this was a great show.  We’ve got a ton of feedback on the interview already, in particular Nelson’s candid account of Ben Smith’s relationship with Jimmy Newcomer, the 19-year old cancer-stricken Rockford area boy who sadly passed away a few weeks ago.  We’ll have more on Ben Smith this coming Tuesday night.

–I’ll be a guest on Hockeenight.com’s PuckCast on Sunday night, June 10th to preview the 2012 NHL Draft taking place June 22-23 in Pittsburgh at the CONSOL Energy Center.  That’s shaping up to what could be a pretty active weekend for the Blackhawks.

Carruth going pro

Several outlets are now reporting the Chicago Blackhawks have signed goaltender Mac Carruth to a three-year entry level contract.  Carruth was selected 191st overall by the Blackhawks in the seventh round of the 2010 Entry Draft.

RDS reporter Renaud Lavoie was first to report Carruth signed to a three-year deal with an NHL cap hit (under the current collective bargaining agreement) of $525,000 per season.  Lavoie has been first to report many prospects signing entry levels in the past.  The contract would be a two-way deal, so he’d make far less, in the neighborhood of $67,000 per while in the AHL or ECHL.  The Blackhawks needed to sign Carruth or he would have been eligible to for Draft re-entry. He can still return to junior hockey for one more season, be it with Portland or should a trade be worked out with another club.

While this deal has not been officially confirmed nor announced by the Blackhawks it should be shortly.  CapGeek.com has different, unconfirmed numbers on Carruth’s deal at this point.  Announcement or not, all signs point to Carruth leaving the Portland Winterhawks major junior organization in the WHL for pro hockey in the Blackhawks’ system. PuckChatter~Radio, e.106 w/ Dieter Kurtenbach

Our old friend and one-time TTMI writer Dieter Kurtenbach joined me last night for this week’s PuckChatter~Radio.  Dieter is now a sports writer at the South Florida Sun-Sentinel and covers the Florida Panthers.

On this show recorded late Monday night, Dieter and I discussed the latest controversy surrounding Patrick Kane and what we think of the reaction it has garnered.  Dieter also gives his take on the state of the Blackhawks as well as what steps need to be taken moving forward to get this team back to the Cup.

PuckChatter~Radio with Sam Fels, SecondCityHockey.com – The “Joel Quenneville 5:08 says ‘I just fired your next head coach'” edition

Its been rare when big news breaks right before our show and we get to sink into it when its hot and fresh.

Well, that did happen on Tuesday as Joel Quenneville announced he had relieved assistant coach Mike Haviland of his duties effective immediately.

The Committed Indian and SecondCityHockey.com ‘s own Sam Fels joined me in this 75-minute edition of PuckChatter~Radio to discuss this and the rest of the (to this point) known fallout from another disappointing Blackhawks season.

Sam and I discuss why it was the popular Mike Haviland and not (now former) fellow assistant Mike Kitchen who got the axe.  Sam dishes his points of discontent with the job Joel Quenneville has been doing behind the Blackhawks bench and also his concerns with the recent Dave Bolland trade rumors.

We also break down the validity of the Ryan Suter speculation, the state of Niklas Hjalmarsson, if the ‘Hawks are truly in dire straights, Corey Crawford, the rest of the news of the week and much, much more.

Oh yeah, and one more thing –  Joel Quenneville’s confidential list of potential candidates he will choose from to replace Haviland….. which he claims he hasn’t started yet…. and once he does it will be a secret list…. However, he did tell us on Tuesday that Barry Smith is not on that list… which, again, is secret and not yet begun.

Podcast Monday night with Al Cimaglia & Chris Block

By Chris Block

PuckChatter~Radio returns on Monday night at 7pm central with my guest Al Cimaglia of MyFoxChicago.com.

Join us Live at 7pm central over at BlogTalkRadio.com/TheThirdManIn.

Al and I will be recapping the Blackhawks-Coyotes series and Chicago’s second-consecutive quick playoff exit and analyze what went wrong.

We’ll take a look at all the issues the Blackhawks will be facing this summer, including if an upgrade is needed at the goaltending position.

Also, we will examine post season comments made by the players, Joel Quenneville and Stan Bowman.

I’ll give my take on whether help is on its way from Rockford, who of the call-ups from this past season will start 2012-13 back in the minors and which 2011 ‘Hawks draft picks (excluding Andrew Shaw) have the best shot to make the Blackhawks straight out of training camp.

–For those who cannot listen live, Monday night’s show will be archived at our BlogTalkRadio page, here on our site as well as on Itunes.

–If you missed our recent, well-received Rockford IceHogs season-in-review interview series, you can listen to our chats with Ted Dent, Jeremy Morin, Joe Lavin and Kyle Beach here….. Read more »
