Hawks take the President’s Trophy with 4-1 victory in Edmonton; Drew Leblanc makes his pro debut

The Blackhawks miracle regular season finishes this Saturday night in St Louis.  But first, they have to complete their western Canadian road trip with a stop in Edmonton to face the Oilers.

Now, we all remember it was back on February 25th when the Oilers that took the Hawks to overtime and the Hawks finishing on top 3-2 with a great move by Marian Hossa.  The second match against the troublesome Oilers saw the Hawks surrender 4 goals in the first period on route to a 6-5 defeat on March 10th.

Tonight’s game was the rubber match.  The only thing the Oilers were playing for is pride as the Hawks can clinch the President’s trophy with 2 points.  Read more »

Blackhawks Win Sixth Straight In Sweeping Stars 5-2

The Chicago Blackhawks swept the season series from the Dallas Stars Monday night at the United Center. Dallas came in the winners of five consecutive contests but was no match for a Blackhawks squad that parlayed a big third period into a 5-2 victory.

The win is Chicago’s sixth in a row and puts them one win from locking up home ice in the Western Conference. Three points from Marian Hossa and an active night by the third line, led by Andrew Shaw, paced the Blackhawks effort.

Brandon Saad took a nice feed from Jonathan Toews in the first minute of action. However, he could not settle the puck and the attempt was off the mark.  The Hawks settled into the Dallas zone for much of the opening minutes. Read more »

Boy, oh boy. It’s been a pretty “Wild” week as far as hockey news go. We’ve discovered chronic fomenter of unrest Steve Ott has a sensitive side, Jean-Sebastien Giguere may be a Jonathan Toews in goalie equipment, and former referee Kelly Fraser finally comes clean about something I’ve long suspected-apparently, he tried to occasionally even things out after he realized he made a bad call. And believe me; I witnessed a few of Fraser’s bad decisions. Read more »

Emery shuts down Wild in Minny 1-0

The Chicago Blackhawks won their third straight game Tuesday in opportunistic fashion, making a Marian Hossa tally hold up behind Ray Emery’s third shutout of the season. Razor stopped all 20 shots he faced as the Blackhawks won 1-0 at the Excel Energy Center.

Chicago had several nice chances in the early minutes. Three minutes into the game, Duncan Keith swiped a puck along the boards and got to the front of the net with Andrew Shaw on his right. Keith’s shot was absorbed by Niklas Backstrom.

The Wild had a chance when Devin Setoguchi got his stick on a slap shot in the eighth minute. However, the deflection skidded along the crease and never found the net. Read more »

Blackhawks clinch playoff berth with win over Preds

The Blackhawks completed the weekend sweep of the Predators with a 5-3 victory on Sunday night at the United Center, becoming the first team in the league to clinch a playoff berth.

A pair of goals inside of one minute during the third period was the difference for Chicago, which beat Nashville for fourth time this season. The Blackhawks moved to 9-0-0 in the second game of back-to-backs during this condensed season.

Ray Emery earned a second consecutive start after shutting out the Predators on 20 shots in Nashville on Saturday. He stopped 19 of 22 shots in this one, coming up with key saves during the second and third periods while the game was still up for grabs. Read more »

Once is enough; Hawks beat Preds 1-0 in Nash City

Now that the trade deadline has come and gone, it’s time to get down to business and make the final push for the playoffs.

The Hawks only acquisition before 3pm EST Wednesday, was Michal Handzus from the San Jose Sharks.  He made a great first impression on Thursday in Chicago winning important face offs and proving to Stan Bowman that his only deal was a good one.

Today was a trip to Smashville to play the pesky Predators.  Although the Preds are on the outside of the playoffs looking in, they still give the Hawks trouble when they meet.  This would be the second meeting between these teams within five days and this game is the first of a home and home series with the Preds invading the UC on Sunday evening.

Dave Bolland and Patrick Sharp did not make the flight to Nashville and it is still undetermined when they will return to the line up.  Read more »

Late goal gives Anaheim season sweep of ‘Hawks

The Anaheim Ducks completed the season sweep of the Blackhawks on Friday at the United Center with a 2-1 regulation win. Ray Emery suffered his first loss of the season because a Sheldon Souray shot deflected off a Blackhawks defenseman in front of the net for the game-winning goal.

Chicago managed just one of a possible six points against the Western Conference rival Ducks on the season. The Blackhawks still hold a three point lead in the standings with one game in hand over Anaheim, who entered the United Center on Friday in the midst of a four-game losing streak.

The Western Conference’s two best teams played another tight game with little difference when it came to the shots, hits, and blocked shots. Both teams managed nine shots in the opening period but neither was able to solve the opposing goaltender in the first. Read more »

Blackhawks rebound, blank Flames

The Chicago Blackhawks got goals from two defensemen Tuesday night with some help from Patrick Kane. Ray Emery and the defense took care of the rest as the ‘Hawks snapped back from Monday’s loss, defeating the Calgary Flames 2-0.

The Blackhawks had an early opportunity forty seconds in when Niklas Hjalmarsson held a puck in the Calgary zone. Patrick Kane centered to Dave Bolland, but the Rat couldn’t evaluate the puck past Mikka Kiprusof. Bolland took a high stick from Jerome Iginla at the 2:11 mark to set up the first power play of the night. Kane made a nice move late but Viktor Stalberg couldn’t provide the finish thanks to Chris Butler’s skate.

The first goal belonged to Chicago on a play started when Kane attempted to center to Bolland again in the eighth minute. The puck eluded Bolland but was retrieved by Nick Leddy at the left circle. Leddy’s shot glanced off of the left pad of Kiprusoff and into the goal to make it 1-0 7:09 into the first. Read more »

Hawks roll through Colorado, now 24-2-3

The Chicago Blackhawks continued to roll on the road Monday night, coming away with a 5-2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche. Chicago prevailed despite losing Marian Hossa to an upper body injury early in the game and Brent Seabrook to an apparent benching by coach Joel Quenneville during the second period.

The Blackhawks got off to a fast start, with Jimmy Hayes benefitting from a strong fore check by Dave Bolland to pot his first goal with the ‘Hawks this season. Jan Hejda lost the puck to Patrick Kane, who fired to Hayes in front of the net. Hayes went to the backhand and slid home the game’s first goal at the 3:47 mark.

Less than a minute later, Bryan Bickell took a hit from Erik Johnson but was able to tip the puck out of the Chicago zone. Viktor Stalberg went up the left side and found Andrew Shaw to his right. Shaw went high on Semyon Varlamov and gave the Blackhawks a 2-0 with less than five minutes into the contest. Read more »

To be honest with you, I had forgotten what it felt like after a Hawks loss. I had been perched on Cloud Nine, (clearly a million miles, from reality), for 24 games in a row. There’s such a feeling of “momentary” euphoria when we triumph over the known scoundrels in the NHL. Truly a case of good triumphing over evil – Truth, justice and the Chicago way. When we win, I devour every word of the postgame show as if something meaningful is actually being said. As the song goes, “Oh Lord it’s hard to be humble, when you’re perfect in every way.” While we all knew it couldn’t last, a feeling of invincibility and smugness had settled in during “The Streak.” Read more »
