Blackhawks overtime woes extend in Calgary

By Brad Vandenberk

After an abysmal week that saw the Hawks go 0-2-1, it’s now time to embark on a 6 game road trip spanning over 12 days and playing some difficult opponents out on the West coast.  These are the last six games that the Hawks will play before the Olympic break starting February 9-26.  The Hawks are suffering through a mid season slump and what better team to bust this slump then the streaking Calgary Flames.  These same Flames gave the Hawks trouble during their last meeting back on November 27th until Patrick Kane threw a backhand over Reto Berra with just 18 seconds left in the 3rd period winning 3-2.  The start of this current road trip is also game one of a back to back with a quick visit to Van-city on Wednesday before heading south to enjoy some fun in the sun, with San Jose, LA, Anaheim and Phoenix waiting patiently.  Read more »

About 20 years ago, our friend, and town undertaker, suggested to my wife that I put lights on the pine tree in our front yard. At that time the tree was about even with the roof of our house. Now, I’m not sure Mike had the wherewithal to anticipate that I would be climbing up the center of that tree for the last 20 years to add and replace strands of C-9 bulbs – however the thought of subterfuge entered my mind while I hung on for dear life this year. (Reluctantly, last year I had to finally acquiesce and replace the C-9 bulbs with C-7’s so the circuits would quit blowing in the house.) Were Mike and my better half in cahoots?  Read more »

Raanta leads Hawks to victory in first NHL start

By Michael Calvert

In Wednesday night’s game against the rather lowly Calgary Flames, Coach Q decided to put Michal Handzus back into the 2nd center spot and move Brandon Pirri down to the 3rd. The move didn’t seem to work.  Aside from Pirri and Handzus switching the lines, the Hawks looked pretty similar to the norm.  One exception to that norm was that Antti Raanta made his first NHL start in net.  I’d say by the eye test Raanta looked pretty good. The Finnish goalie saved 20 of 22 Flames shots in leading the Blackhawks to their 18th win of the season. Read more »

Berra stuns Hawks 3-2 in Overtime in debut for Flames

By Jon Fromi

First Period-Rookie net minder Reto Berra was greeted by lots of vulcanized rubber, to the tune of 18 shots by the Blackhawks in the opening 20 minutes. The first shot on goal came from the stick of Calgary’s Brian McGrattan just over two minutes in. McGrattan then gave the Hawks a power play when he tripped Niklas Hjalmarsson. Chicago got a few shots on net that Reto Berra left out in front, but the Flames survived the two minutes.

Crawford saw his share of action in the first ten minutes. In the tenth minute, Matt Stajan took a feed from Curtis Glencross and snapped a shot at the net but was denied by the Chicago goalie. A minute later he gloved an attempt by Jiri Hudler. Read more »
