LondonRookieTournament_2014

By Brad Vandenberk

The last game of this year’s three-game rookie tournament saw the Blackhawks and Senators faceoff. Teuvo Teravainen, Mark McNeill and Kirill Gotovets worked their way back into the lineup, with Cody Caron, Ryan Van Stralen and Justin Holl all out for this one. Mac Carruth was in between the pipes for the Hawks with Chris Driedger on the Ottawa side.

Highly touted Ottawa rookie Curtis Lazar did not dress, nor did Matt Puempel, another top Sens prospect who scored in each of Ottawa’s first two games. Read more »

On location report of Hawks prospects shootout loss on Sunday in London

By Brad Vandenberk

Well the smell of hockey is in the air with the annual Rookie Tournament hosted by Budweiser Gardens in London Ontario. This is the stage for the future up and comers to prove what they can offer the big club with every bit of the organizational brass in the stands looking down. The teams involved are the Pittsburgh Penguins, Ottawa Senators, Toronto Maple Leafs and Chicago Blackhawks.

The Hawks met a very quick Toronto team on Saturday night, losing 4-2.

On Sunday afternoon they took on the Penguins prospects. Teuvo Teravainen, Mark McNeill and Kirill Gotovets did not dress for Sunday’s affair. Oshawa General’s Ken Appleby started in net for the Hawks. Read more »

Checking in with Teuvo talk, Sweden camp, Zagreb IceHogs, Beach’s try-out contract and more

By Chris Block

The full AHL regular season schedule is supposed to drop on Tuesday. It was finalized Monday. This is the latest I can recall the American Hockey League taking to get its schedule done. The reason it took until the last week of August (less than six weeks prior to Opening night) this time around is because the NBA schedule wasn’t completed just a couple of weeks ago, in mid-August. AHL franchises, Lake Erie (Cleveland), Charlotte, San Antonio and Oklahoma City share buildings with NBA teams and the AHL couldn’t lock in those teams’ home dates until the NBA finalized its schedule.

Teuvo’s Turn

Impression I get is a roster spot is essentially Teuvo Teravainen’s to take in training camp. If he’s ready, the Blackhawks will not hold him back for any reason. However, if he’s still hesitant, over-thinking or a bit over-matched physically (these things will all come around, no one is doubting that) in half or more of his preseason appearances, there would be no hesitation to give Teravainen a month, two or however long it may take in Rockford. Odds and Saads; Stephen Johns signing notes, Hartman debuts; Bollig, Raanta, Blackhawks and IceHogs bits

By Chris Block

This is way later than I targeted for this week, but better late than never.  Today was my first chance to get to this.  And just in time now to start working on next week’s… Anyhow, on with it.

Stephen Johns Signs

On Wednesday (April 2) the Chicago Blackhawks inked Notre Dame senior defenseman Stephen Johns to a two-year entry-level contract that will begin with the 2014-15 season.

Johns has also agreed to a professional try-out contract for the remainder of this season with the Rockford IceHogs.

He traveled with the IceHogs to Abbotsford, British Columbia on Thursday for Rockford’s big 2-game set with the Heat this weekend.

Johns is expected to make his professional debut tonight in Abbotsford.  It looks like he’ll wear number #36, which was Maxim Shalunov’s number earlier in the season. Read more »

Brad also attended Blackhawks prospect camp this past week and shares his thoughts on the standouts; how some other top prospects looked as well as some surprise performers as well.

We also look at the new assistant coach in Rockford and one particular intriguing aspect of that hire as well as some of the new player contracts a busy Stan Bowman has been dishing out the past two weeks as well.

A look at the non-drafted Free Agent Invitees at this week’s Blackhawks prospect camp

By Chris Block

On Monday, the Chicago Blackhawks will open their annual summer prospect camp over at Johnny’s Ice House West on Madison Street west of the United Center.

Blackhawks draft picks such as Mark McNeill, Phillip Danault, Stephen Johns, Mac Carruth, Dillon Fournier and Carl Dahlstrom among others will draw most of the attention.  However, filling out the practice groups and intra-squad scrimmages are a host of undrafted free agents from across the globe.

With 2012 first round pick Teuvo Teravainen skipping this year’s camp and 2013 first-rounder Ryan Hartman missing out while on the mend from a recent shoulder surgery, more opportunity for other less recognizable names and faces to leave an impression on Blackhawks management now exists.

In the past some of these camp invitees have gone on to earn contracts with the Blackhawks, Rockford IceHogs or other organizations in the NHL and AHL.  This year’s crop is likely to be no different.

Today we’ll be profiling some of the more interesting names attending this year’s prospect camp under invitation.

JACKSON WHISTLE, 18 – Goaltender – Kelowna Rockets (WHL)

Perhaps the most intriguing name on the list of free agent invitees at this summer’s prospect camp is Kelowna Rockets goaltender Jackson Whistle. Read more »
