Early season story on Antti Raanta, his Opening Night injury scare, how he became a Blackhawk, what won him over, his style and much more

For those who buy or read The Committed Indian program on, or at Blackhawks home games, I have a 2-page feature running in Wednesday’s issue that hopefully you’ll find interesting.  The following is a story I did on Antti Raanta that ran in The Committed Indian back in November.  I’ve had requests to post it here, but kept forgetting to do so.  So here it is, as it ran on 11/6/13.  Raanta was recalled to the Blackhawks eleven days later, after Nikolai Khabibulin went down with a groin injury.  Stan Bowman announced today that Khabibulin underwent shoulder surgery that Bowman said would keep the veteran netminder out of action another 4-5 months.  Khabibulin will turn 41 this coming Monday.  While Bowman claimed Khabibulin “could” return this season, that timetable would put Khabibulin out until around the time of the Stanley Cup Finals.  Thus, Raanta, for the foreseeable future, is Corey Crawford’s backup and second on the Blackhawks goaltending depth chart.

A long way from his home in Finland, Antti Raanta led the Rockford IceHogs onto the ice at AT&T Center in San Antonio last month.  Outside, it was just another steamy October Saturday in south Texas.  Inside, the IceHogs were opening the 2013-14 season.  And for Raanta, it was the beginning of the next stage in his pursuit of realizing his dream of becoming an NHL goaltender. PuckChatter~Radio: Sam Fels on the IceHogs & CBA

By Chris Block

Sam Fels, lead Blackhawks maven at TheCommittedIndian.com was kind enough to join me Monday night for the jam-packed return edition of PuckChatter~Radio.

In great detail, we recapped the Rockford IceHogs at the 28.9% mark of the AHL season as well as listen to some conversations we’ve had with a few IceHogs over the past few weeks.  There is a lot going on these days out in Rockford with the suddenly first-place IceHogs and we covered most of it.

We also touch on Tuesday’s much overhyped meeting between six NHL owners and as many NHL players – Is it more posturing and sideways negotiating by the Gary Bettman and the owners in attempt to undermine Don Fehr and divide the players, or is the league finally ready to work towards getting a deal done?  We discuss.  Also, Phillip Danault and Mark McNeill were named to the Canadian U20 World Championships selection camp roster on Monday.  How do they fit and what are their chances of making Team Canada?

All this and more on this edition of Puck Chatter.

PuckChatter with Sam Fels on Monday night

By Chris Block

PuckChatter~Radio returns Live on Monday December 3rd at 8pm central. Sam Fels of the TheCommittedIndian.com will join me to discuss all the hockey there is to talk about as well as the latest in the ongoing NHL CBA labor negotiation saga which may very well come to a head on Tuesday.

We’ll recap all the latest goings on with the first-place Rockford IceHogs, who have won 7 of their last 9 games to vault themselves from two games below the .500 mark to 1st in the Midwest Division.

We’ll discuss the ongoing experiment that has seen Jimmy Hayes move off the wing to the center ice position. Also, we’ll review several IceHogs at the 1/4 mark of the AHL season including the up and down play of Nick Leddy, Andrew Shaw and Dylan Olsen.  Is Kyle Beach finally coming around? Does Jeremy Morin fit in on the Hawks if the CBA mess is resolved soon? How good are rookies Brandon Saad and Adam Clendening?

All this and more — You can listen live on Monday night or in the archives either here  on the web site, on Itunes or over at BlogTalkRadio.
