Corey Crawford stops all the pucks and scores all the goals in Season Opener; Not exactly, but Hawks win 3-2 in the shootout

By Jon Fromi

The Chicago Blackhawks shook off a sluggish opening two periods in Dallas Thursday night, riding goalie Corey Crawford to a 3-2 shootout victory at the American Airlines Center. Crawford kept Chicago in the game in the face of a speedy Stars attack until the Hawks were able to rally in the third period with a Patrick Sharp tally. Patrick Kane potted the lone goal in the skills competition to get the 2014-15 campaign off on the right foot.

First Period-Marcus Kruger was called for the hook on Vernon Fiddler less than two minutes into the contest and the Stars kept Crawford busy on the resulting power play. The Hawks withstood the pressure and kept Dallas out of the henhouse. Chicago killed a second penalty in the 15th minute when Jeremy Morin was caught cross-checking Ryan Garbutt. Read more »

Blackhawks stone Oilers in Saskatoon; Teravainen notches first goal in Chicago uniform

By Chris Block

Teuvo Teravainen finally made his well-anticipated preseason debut on Sunday in the central Saskatchewan town of Saskatoon.

Delayed, because of a Cam Barker open ice hit on the Notre Dame campus seven days prior that left him with a non-specified upper body injury, Teravainen did not fail to deliver in his first taste of live game action. Teravainen scored late in the second period off a perfect Adam Clendening slap-pass into the slot that gave the Blackhawks a 3-0 lead over the Edmonton Oilers after 40 minutes. While only exhibition, the goal was Teravainen’s first in a Blackhawks’ uniform.

After all was said and done, the Blackhawks white-washed a thoroughly underwhelming Edmonton squad, trouncing the Oilers 5-0. Five different Chicago players scored and Scott Darling picked up a shutout, though he was barely tested in the game. When he was, his posts were large enough to save him. Read more »

Odds and Saads; Stephen Johns signing notes, Hartman debuts; Bollig, Raanta, Blackhawks and IceHogs bits

By Chris Block

This is way later than I targeted for this week, but better late than never.  Today was my first chance to get to this.  And just in time now to start working on next week’s… Anyhow, on with it.

Stephen Johns Signs

On Wednesday (April 2) the Chicago Blackhawks inked Notre Dame senior defenseman Stephen Johns to a two-year entry-level contract that will begin with the 2014-15 season.

Johns has also agreed to a professional try-out contract for the remainder of this season with the Rockford IceHogs.

He traveled with the IceHogs to Abbotsford, British Columbia on Thursday for Rockford’s big 2-game set with the Heat this weekend.

Johns is expected to make his professional debut tonight in Abbotsford.  It looks like he’ll wear number #36, which was Maxim Shalunov’s number earlier in the season. Read more »

Odds and Saads: Morin’s shot, Teuvo plan, Carey signing, Hartman, Johns and more

By Chris Block

MORIN’s OPPORTUNITY

Don’t wait for the IceHogs’ leading goal scorer to be back in Rockford, at least for the time being.

Jeremy Morin was told he is up with the Blackhawks for the remainder of the season.

So, unless there is some major change in direction, don’t expect him to be back in Rockford before then, if ever.

I suppose there is a chance he’d return to Rockford in the event the IceHogs team makes the playoffs and the Blackhawks are healthy enough to the point Morin slides down the depth chart far enough.  But that would also have to mean Teuvo Teravainen would play outstanding enough that the Blackhawks would no longer care about burning a year on Teravainen’s slide-eligible entry level contract – which contrary to what is being insinuated publically, they are not planning to do so at this time.

–In case you missed it last week, Odds and Saads will be a weekly feature here on TheThirdManIn.com.  This is part one of two for this week.

TEUVO TIME

Teuvo Teravainen will make his NHL regular season debut for the Blackhawks when they host the Dallas Stars at the United Center. Read more »
