Lindbloom’s View: It’s Teuvo Time

Lindbloom_SuperTeuvo_2014Mar25(credit to:  )

By Rich Lindbloom

“Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. Yes it’s Superteravainen, strange visitor from another planet, with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men! Superteravainen, who can change the course of mighty rivers, play #2 center for the Hawks, bend steel in his bare hands, and who, disguised as Patrick Kane, a mild mannered forward for a great metropolitan hockey team, fights a never ending battle for truth, justice and the American way.” Read more »

Lindbloom’s View: Frosty Times

Lindbloom_Snowman2“Skate!” – Michelindbloomo

”Every block of stone has a statue inside it
and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it. – Michelangelo

By Rich Lindbloom

In 1501, Michelangelo was commissioned to sculpt a statue of the famous biblical figure David. He was given a block of damaged marble 19 feet tall, chiseling away at it for almost three years. The finished sculpture was over 17 feet tall! Purportedly, when Michelangelo finished his masterpiece, it was so life like he shouted, “Speak!” I thought about the difficulties a sculptor might encounter when detailing his creation. As I packed the snow to form Frosty on Saturday, chunks would fall out and I’d have to start all over. Can you imagine if Michelangelo hit down a little too hard with that chisel – I’m pretty sure that’s what happened to a lot of the sculptures that have missing arms. Read more »

Hawks top Preds 3-1, avenge brutal November loss in Music City

By Brad Vandenberk

Remember November 16, 2013?  That was the last time the Hawks entered Bridgestone Arena in Nashville.  The game ended looking more like a murder scene than a hockey game.  The Predators taught the Hawks a lesson, defeating them 7-2.  After that game, the Hawks went on to win their next seven out of eight, which included their circus road trip. If we look back to Saturday night when the Hawks were blown out on the road 7-3, we start to see a trend here. The Hawks then came home on Sunday to play a complete effort beating up on the LA Kings 3-1.  Now it’s back to the scene of the crime to show why Chicago are the defending Cup champs.  Read more »

Hawks hammered in Smashville

By Michael Calvert

Well, that was embarrassing.  Chicago went into Nashville Saturday night to face a flailing Predator team sporting a backup goalie.  One would think that a team with little to no offense and a backup with ‘Khabibulin bad’ numbers would be an easy win.

1st period:

The Wall, who shall be known from here forth as The Gate, lets in a pretty easy tap in from Matt Cullen off a pedestrian wrist shot rebound.  I’ll call him the gate because we all know they can’t really keep much out, figure out their weak spots and in you shall go.  Read more »

PuckChatter~Radio, Not Late Enough

By Chris Block

Since I had to work real late today, and missed the Blackhawks game, I figured we may as well do a PuckChatter~Radio.

On the show (we finished recording just before the Blackhawks-Panthers trade was announced), we discussed the Alex Broadhurst recall, Jeremy Morin’s scratchings, the Andrew Shaw contract extension, who’s next?, Brandon Bollig, the Blackhawks start, IceHogs injuries, the next wave of prospects, and which IceHogs defenseman has been flying under the radar this season.  Also, we’ll get to some listener emails, our upcoming trip to St. Louis, Superstar states his irritation with Block’s general tardiness – and much, much more.

Lindbloom’s View: It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye….

CowboysEatMaypo_Lindbloom_2013_1009“Cowboys eat Maypo.” – Marky’s dad

By Rich Lindbloom

I’m going to take a wild guess and assume most of you have never heard of Maypo. It was a maple flavored, hot oat cereal from the 1950’s.

Initially, the cereal was not making any inroads into the cereal market. However, after a heavy advertising blitz featuring Marky Maypo, the cereal saw an increase in sales of 78%!  I googled the commercial just for the heck of it the other day, still finding it highly entertaining. The fact that I can recall the famous shouts of Marky, (“I want my Maypo!”) as his dad wolfs down his cereal, is proof of its effectiveness. (or a sign of me watching way too much TV as a kid.) Update on Stephen Johns, BMO $1.5M upgrades, Saad All-Rookie team, Danault, Karlsson, Waite and Stan and USA Hockey

By Chris Block

Some news and notes to kick off what appears will be a very eventful weekend.

–We’ll have full, pick-by-pick coverage on this site of the Blackhawks’ draft selections this Sunday from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

Chicago currently owns picks in the last pick in the 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th rounds.

Their 2nd and 3rd round selections were dealt to Winnipeg at the trade deadline in 2012 in exchange for Johnny Oduya.  The Blackhawks also owned extra picks before dealing them for Michal Handzus (San Jose’s original pick in the 4th round reacquired from CHI) and Henrik Karlsson (originally Ottawa’s 7th round pick).

–If you missed the Chicago Blackhawks Stanley Cup parade and rally on Friday , it will be rebroadcasted tonight (Saturday) on Comcast SportsNet in Chicago at 7pm.

Brandon Saad was named to the NHL’s All-Rookie team on Saturday.

Saad joins Florida’s Jonathan Huberdeau (Calder Trophy winner for best rookie), Montreal winger Brendan Gallagher (a Calder Trophy finalist as well as Saad), goalie Jake Allen of St. Louis and defenseman Jonas Brodin of Minnesota and Justin Schultz of Edmonton.

Interesting to note, yet not surprising considering he wasn’t a Calder finalist, that Nail Yakupov, who led all NHL rookies in scoring this season with 17 goals and 14 assists was left off the All-Rookie team.  That doesn’t happen often.  Read more »

PuckChatter~Radio, e.130, Don’t Tell Joel

By Chris Block

On Tuesday night, PuckChatter~Radio returned to review the initial three games of the Stanley Cup Finals, illuminate the issues ailing the Blackhawks as well as try to make sense of some of the decisions and moves coach Joel Quenneville has been making behind the bench so far in facing the Boston Bruins

I’ve got to tell you… I turned flat out exhausted and needed an intermission, and an ice pack after my attempt to do the latter.

We also previewed tonight’s Game 4 in Beantown, discussed Bryan Bickell’s status in the current series and what Zdeno Chara could possibly have been thinking?; Brandon Bollig‘s play, the trouble with Viktor Stalberg; the thing about momentum… How Dave Bolland has played more minutes than Patrick Sharp and Patrick Kane at times in this series? Our take, and the irony of it, on the Marian HossaBen Smith warmup saga of Game 3; why folks need to stop excusing, or making excuses for captain Jonathan Toews and much, much more.

Also, bathroom exits and trouble with the auto mechanic… all on edition number 130 of Puck Chatter.

Lindbloom’s View: Taking Care of Business

lindbloom_20130605_TakingCareofBusiness

By Rich Lindbloom

Back in the early 70’s, I used to work on my tan in the backyard. I’ve always found it very hard to just lay there and bake – I remember a friend once saying he could lay out for about five minutes and then it’s “OK, what’s next!” To while away the time while working on transforming myself into a bronze Adonis, I’d often read. A favorite pastime was setting up a chessboard and studying chess openings from the over 1,000 page book of The Theory of Chess Openings.

As I headed out to the back yard one day after greasing up with the Coppertone, I saw a book on hockey that my sisters had just finished reading. Bored (actually confused) with trying to figure out what a Grandmaster was saying about the Caro-Khan Opening, I grabbed the book and headed for the lounge chair. Read more »

PuckChatter~Radio, e.129, Your Debutante Just Knows What You Need, But I Know What You Want

By Chris Block

Sorry.  I’ve been listening to a lot of Blonde on Blonde of late.

On Tuesday’s night’s show, we previewed the Chicago Blackhawks – Boston Bruins Stanley Cup Finals series, which, of course, begins Wednesday night at the United Center at 7pm central.

We detail our predictions as well as take a look at the key players for each side.

Outside of that, other topics included Dustin Byfuglien, apparently being too fat to trade; Viktor Stalberg digging himself further into Joel Quenneville’s doghouse and perhaps why.  Also, men being gross, a Boston fan slams Chicago, homeless people and their pets and much, much more.
